Job summary
We have a fantastic opportunity for a full time Thoracic Surgeon to join our UK renowned Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, which has a 100 patient beds, including many individual rooms, employs over 400 staff performing an average of 450 thoracic surgical cases and between 200 and 300 non-surgical thoracic interventional procedures together with 900 cardiac and close to 2400 cardiology procedures each year.
Facilities include a highly equipped 22 bed critical care unit, separate 32-bedded cardio-thoracic surgery ward; on-site cardio-respiratory assessment unit, full radiology support (CT/MRI with a mobile PET-scanner), rehabilitation gym.
Training and an interest in performing portal access, lung cancer surgery, mediastinal pathologies, endobronchial cancer work, lung volume reduction surgery to include endobronchial valve insertion and chest wall surgery is paramount in this exciting role.
A good knowledge of cancer pathways, MDTs and satellite clinics would be useful for this post.
Main duties of the job
Your role will be to support your thoracic surgical colleagues, covering a substantive position that dovetails into the CTCs plans and be involved in its well established minimally invasive thoracic and cardiac surgical programme for its patients primarily from Mid and South Essex but some referred from further afield for the specialist collaborative work the Centre undertakes like chest wall resection and reconstruction.
The Centre's well-equipped hybrid theatre suite currently supports TAVI, hybrid cardiac procedures along with major vascular surgery and Interventional radiology services and you will be expected to provide a Thoracic surgery service of the highest quality, working flexibly with colleagues to achieve the hospital agreed planned activity for in/ out patient services and ensuring that standards are developed through clinical audit, evidence based research and appraisal.
Your role will be to ensure that techniques new to the CTC or to your practice, are ethically approved and introduced after compliance which may require appropriate training, with approval by the clinical service unit lead and clinical governance process with arrangements for evaluation and clinical audit.
As our Consultant, you will be responsible for and expected to, ensure effective coordination of all post-operative and ward based clinical care in the absence of their colleagues whilst on call and provide input into the discussion and management of patients from external referral sources.
