Job summary

We have developed a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic, dynamic and suitably qualified physiotherapist with a special interest in advanced practice to join our musculoskeletal outpatient therapy team at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford Essex.

The successful candidate will have a pivotal role in leading the development and provision of services related to complex disorders within the musculoskeletal service. They will have the chance to work alongside the wider surgical, medical and nursing teams to help contribute to and shape the delivery of a high quality, efficient and effective service.

You will be well supported in all your roles by fellow Clinical Specialist Physiotherapists, Extended Scope Practitioner Physiotherapists, Senior Physiotherapists and Operational Leads. We also offer support for on-going personal development, clinical excellence and leadership skills training.

You will have input into staff and service development, audit and the opportunity to lead on service development in your specialist field. You must be able to demonstrate advanced physiotherapy experience within a musculoskeletal physiotherapy setting.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in an extended role beyond the usual physiotherapy scope of practice. This includes the clinical management of patients with complex problems referred for a hospital outpatient opinion. As an autonomous physiotherapy practitioner you will be responsible for the examination, assessment and further management of patients within the outpatient setting. Complex patient management may include listing for surgery or referring for special tests/investigations from other healthcare professionals. It is essential that you are able to work as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team, as well as the physiotherapy department.

Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

  • Work autonomously, with an extended scope of physiotherapy practice in consultant led clinics, as a first clinical contact providing expert clinical care, leadership and consultancy for patients and service users experiencing musculoskeletal pain, including referrals to other services / specialists and for further investigations / tests / imaging.
  • To take a lead on the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of highly complex patients requiring multidisciplinary management forming part of the remit, as an essential element of an integrated musculoskeletal pathway. Work in line with national guidance and existing evidence.
  • To lead the investigation and monitoring of efficiency and effectiveness of current services through audit, research and service evaluation. Actively work towards future development of services.
  • Undertake supervision and management of qualified staff within the Therapy Services physiotherapy department.
  • Collaboratively lead the physiotherapy service in the treatment and management of extremely complex musculoskeletal conditions, providing expert physiotherapy advice across the Trust.
  • Lead physiotherapy research projects in the department. Provide expert advice to GPs, referrers and other users of specialist area, to facilitate active links with associated support groups and promote the expert role.
  • To ensure that the service meets the local and national requirements and report progress regularly to key agencies.
  • Act as an expert specialist resource for all staff clinically and non-clinically.

  • Autonomous and expert input with assessment and care planning for referred patients with a variety of extremely complex presentations.
  • Expert physiotherapy knowledge and management of a highly specialised clinical caseload formulated through a combination of both in-depth experience and demonstrated post graduate study at masters degree level or equivalent.
  • Support Lead Therapist and Head of Therapy in day-to-day management of the Therapy department and deputise in their absence.
  • To independently request and use the results of specialist investigations (e.g. x-rays, MRIs and US scans).
  • Participation in multi-disciplinary meetings and discussions around the management of complex patients.
  • Participation in research, CPD and service review based on clinical audit.
  • Liaise and network with other professional colleagues in neighboring trusts and specialist sites.
  • Ensure effective communication with all service users and stakeholders.
