Job summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant Urologist within the Urology Department to join a team ten consultant urologists across Broomfield/ Basildon Hospitals, providing urology services to the people of Mid & South Essex. Our sister site, Southend Hospital has a further 10 consultant urologists.

This is a general post, with a subspecialty interest that complement the department. Paediatric Urology, urethroplasty/andrology, endourology are areas in which we are looking to expand however, we are keen to attract consultants who make positive contributions in other aspects

Applications are welcomed from enthusiastic, dynamic and suitably qualified candidates. Candidates with an interest in education are also welcome and we have close links with ARU and new medical school in Chelmsford, Essex.

The department provides a wide range of sub-specialist areas in urology, including renal and adrenal surgery; robotic surgery, including prostatectomy and pyeloplasty; female urology; paediatrics, and complex stone surgery.

The regional cancer centre is at the Southend Hospital, where robotic cystectomy and prostatectomy are carried out, as well as some of the more complex nephrectomies. There is also a robot at the Broomfield Hospital for upper tract urology cases (nephrectomy, pyeloplasty and adrenalectomy). Complex stone services with PCNL are centralised at Broomfield Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The Urology department is currently based over the three sites. We are in the process of streamlining our activities across the sites and it is likely that the on call commitment will soon be approximately 1:10 with middle grade cover at Broomfield Hospital. Basildon Hospital will have a focus on day cases and 23 hour stay day case procedures. Job planning will be flexible and dependent on successful candidate interests to work across Basildon and Broomfield Hospital. This post is based at Broomfield Hospital and Basildon Hospital.

As part of the MSE at Southend Hospital, there is a separate on call service and is the specialist cancer centre for Urology. If necessary to support specialist interest, sessions at Southend Hospital can be facilitated.

Departmental Activity

The Urology Department promotes the 'one-stop' model and offers diagnostic clinics such as haematuria diagnosis, with sonography and cystoscopy support. Outpatient clinics include TWOC, instillations, prostate assessment, botox, specialist stone clinics.
