Job summary

The Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department provides excellent care to all women within South East Essex, and this includes the areas of Southend, Rochford, Rayleigh, Benfleet and Canvey Island.

There were over 4,076 deliveries in 2019/20 and a caesarean section rate of 34%. There were over 17,116 outpatient gynaecological attendances in 2019/2020. The Directorate is the designated Gynaecological Cancer Centre for South Essex and also provides a wide variety of expertise in gynaecology. The Trust has developed plans to acquire a Surgical Robot for the Urology, Gynae-oncology and Colorectal services. The post holder will have the ability to utilise or develop these skills as appropriate.

Gynaecological Oncology services underwent a reconfiguration in 2008 with the merger of the South Essex Cancer Network (comprising Southend and Basildon University Hospitals with about 250 new gynaecological cancer cases per year) with the Mid Essex to form a unified Essex Cancer Network covering Southend, Basildon, Chelmsford, Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals. The Fetal Medicine Service has undergone significant improvements over the last few years due to collaboration with the Harris Birthright Centre in King's College Hospital in London.

Main duties of the job

ST1/2 level doctor will be expected to gain the necessary competencies by rotating through the region in order to gain the relevant experience

Liaise between Midwives, nurses, other junior doctors, patients, relatives and senior medical staff

Attend to the day to day management of day case, out-patient and in-patients

Attend and participate in ward rounds and operating theatre sessions as timetabled

Attend general and specialist out-patient, diagnostic and pre-assessment clinics

Teach medical students as directed

To keep up-to date with all administrative duties including letters, results and discharge summaries as required

Study for higher examinations and maintain continued professional development

Undertake and assist in audit projects at various times throughout the rotations

Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions

Comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave

About us

The junior medical team work on a shift system but have a named consultant on duty for the day/night. Wherever possible the timetable aims to provide continuity of junior medical staff, although there may be occasions where the on-take commitment and the junior doctor's requirement lead to alternative arrangements.

  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • MRCS or equivalent.

Desirable

  • GMC
  • FRCS (Plas) or equivalent.
  • MRCOG Part 1
