Job summary
The Ophthalmology service is delivered to the population of South Essex from two sites Southend University Hospital, Broomfield Hospital and Orsett Hospital, part of the Basildon & Thurrock General Hospital NHS Trust.
Southend have a stand-alone unit within the Southend NHS teaching hospital site comprises of 2 dedicated theatres, 1 of which is GA, 2 day stay bays with 1 single en-suite side room (9 beds) and 17 outpatient rooms which include diagnostic facilities for all sub-specialties. Plans are currently underway to expand and modernise the unit to meet the present day demands. Our self-contained satellite unit at Orsett Hospital also provides a dedicated day stay theatre and outpatient facilities.
The Vitreoretinal service is well established. It is a very busy unit and there is scope for further development both locally and in the community.
Ophthalmology currently perform in excess of 500 vitrectomy procedures a year. There is access to OCT at both sites and ocular ultrasound at Southend.
The research facilities include a robust R&D committee, research nurses and auxiliary staff, currently undertaking over 10 NIHR ophthalmology research trials per annum.
Main duties of the job
Research
The post is focused on delivering research projects. These duties will be carried out at Southend University Hospital, Anglia Ruskin University (Chelmsford), Vision & Eye Research Unit (Anglia Ruskin University) and Mid Essex Hospital (Chelmsford).
Proposed projects on offer include those focused on imaging and surgical retinal diseases.
Clinical
The timetable will include attendance to one vitreoretinal clinic and vitreoretinal theatre list per week
Supervision will be provided in both settings, with the opportunity to assist with and carry out vitreoretinal surgery as appropriate.
Weekly in house half day teaching which the trainee will be expected to attend and contribute
Opportunity to attend at the Royal Society of Medicine Ophthalmology Section monthly meetings in London
Participation in research and audit
Organisational
Attending to administrative matters and correspondence relating to patients
SPAs to be undertaken on-site
