Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Deputy Director of Operations.

The post holder will support the Deputy Chief Operating Officer in ensuring strategic delivery and leadership across a range of Clinical Service Units (CSUs) within the Trust; playing a key role in supporting and coaching CSUs to deliver high quality clinical services and Trust objectives.

The Deputy Director of Operations will establish and foster an effective working relationship with all members of the Corporate Operations Team, to lead improvements in operational performance, service delivery and the achievement of organisational priorities.

The post holder will have a designated corporate portfolio role which will include achievement of the 4 hour A&E constitutional standard, as well as wider performance issues, patient safety, quality and service improvement.

In conjunction with the Deputy Chief Operating Officer the Deputy Director of Operations will ensure that systems and processes are in place to comply with relevant legislation and governance requirements, linking with external bodies such as commissioners about service developments, performance and clinical care pathways.

The post holder will deputise for the Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Chief Operating Officer as required.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Director of Operations will

- participate as member of the Corporate Operations Team supporting the development of the Trust's strategic direction, contributing to the overall leadership, direction and management of the Trust.

- manage the delivery of efficient, high quality patient services through Clinical Service Unit structure.

- be accountable for the achievement of key clinical & operational performance activity standards for Urgent and Emergency care & patient flow.

- be accountable for the delivery of patient flow through the organisation, including line management of the Command Centre & associated services.

- provide leadership & to CSUs in the delivery of the 4hour A&E national constitutional standard & associated performance metrics, regularly providing assurance reports to the relevant academies, committees and boards.

- act as lead for the 4 hour A&E national constitutional standard and be responsible for a cross CSU portfolio of work to ensure compliance against agreed trajectories and continuous improvement in our national rankings.

- be the lead senior operational manager for winter planning for the organisation including developing and writing the Trust winter operational plan.

- in conjunction with the Deputy COO, review operational delivery and ensure the implementation of appropriate plans and remedial actions where performance is below the agreed standard.

  • Significant recent experience working in an acute provider organisation at senior level (Deputy Director or General Manager level or equivalent).
  • Proven track record of successful operational delivery and improvement of urgent and emergency care performance targets
  • Extensive experience in representing an organisation at Place, Region and at National level
  • Experience of delivering transformational change or leading a large improvement programme
  • Experience in winter planning and operational delivery of winter schemes
  • Experience in the oversight and quality assurance of emergency care data sets, national returns and urgent and emergency care performance metrics
