The "Close Relative Marriage Nurse / Midwife" for the NICU is a completely new role and pilot. Very few CRM Nurses exist in the UK and Bradford NICU is excited to welcome an enthusiastic, dedicated and motivated colleague to join our CQC rated Outstanding service and help us to develop further.

The CRM neonatal nurse/midwife will provide comprehensive care and support to families who have recently had a baby and are close relatives (e.g., cousins, uncles, aunts, or other closely related family members). They will work with a multi-disciplinary healthcare team to ensure the well-being of neonates, particularly in the context of genetic risks and health challenges that may arise from consanguinity. The role includes monitoring, assessing, and advocating for the health and developmental needs of newborns, as well as offering guidance to families on genetic and medical considerations.

Main duties of the job

The CRM neonatal nurse/midwife will proactively work with at risk families practising close relative marriage to encourage a greater level of genetic testing and/or genetic awareness/literacy among families where consanguineous related disorders are present and improve access to genetic services for families to enable informed reproductive decision-making. To contribute to reduced inequalities in infant and child mortality and morbidity.

Support the implementation of the national strategy as an autonomous practitioner at local provider level which will include to:

Develop an understanding of the issues and research evidence of the subject matter.

Ensure that provision of genetic information is available to women/families who are affected by this issue to enable empowered decision making.

Enable parents to make informed choices in a culturally sensitive empowering way.

Initiate sensitive, appropriate conversations with families affected with recessive disorders linked to close relative marriage.

Support and improve engagement with genetic services for affected families.

Establish the role within the neonatal team and be a point of contact referral for the wider team.

Work towards incorporating genetic information into neonatal care where appropriate.

Help to improve access to genetics services for at risk consanguineous families.
