We are seeking enthusiastic, experienced individuals to join the well established, consultant led specialist palliative care services in Bradford. The 3 jobs cover three different services: hospital palliative care with an interest in undergraduate medical education, the Marie Curie Hospice inpatient unit with a special interest in MND and an innovative new post leading Marie Curie REACT (responsive emergency assessment and community team) which identifies, reviews and manages patients with acute palliative care needs through a presence in the Emergency Department and an acute palliative medicine virtual ward in the community.

Job responsibilities

The job plans will be based on the information listed below. The timing of the sessions indicated below may alter. However, the overall composition of the job plan is not expected to change.

A formal job plan meeting will take place no later than 6 months following appointment where the Trust Guidance on SPA allocation will apply.

The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a Consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It should cover all aspects of a Consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it should include personal objectives including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the Consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives. The provisional job plan is set out below. This will be based on the nationally agreed whole-time contract.

Provisional Assessment of Programmed Activities in Job Plan:

The base contract will be for 10 programmed activities. This will be based on the nationally agreed whole-time contract.

The Foundation Trust is keen to support newly appointed consultants and the appointee is encouraged to have a mentor. A number of senior colleagues are available for this purpose and the clinical lead will facilitate this once the appointee takes up the post.

3 ON CALL INFORMATION:

The BTHFT hospital palliative care team and Marie Curie Inpatient unit posts contribute to a 1 in 8 category A out of hours on call rota providing specialist advice by telephone (Bradford Districts and Craven). Payment is a 5% banding supplement.

Marie Cure Inpatient unit and Marie Curie Community REACT virtual ward posts contribute to a 1 in 8 weekend 8-11am day shift in the Emergency Department for Marie Curie REACT.

4 BASE HOSPITAL:

Marie Curie Hospice, Bradford and Bradford Royal Infirmary as described above.

5 PROFESSIONAL AND MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY/ACCOUNTABILITY:

The post-holder is managerially accountable to the Clinical Director and professionally accountable to the Chief Medical Officer at BTHFT and the Medical Director at Marie Curie Hospice.

6 DEPARTMENT PROFILE:

These are permanent posts; 2 have arisen due to existing employees taking on executive and research roles, Marie Curie REACT virtual ward is a new post. The contract of employment sits with Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Three existing consultants rotate between three different services to provide comprehensive specialist palliative medical care to the district: Marie Curie Hospice Bradford, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust. There is an expectation that these advertised posts will continue to support this integration of services by being part of this rotation.

Additional non clinical responsibilities such as strategic planning, training of junior staff, acting as hospice Medical Director and quality and safety are divided by negotiation amongst the consultants.
