Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated Band 2 Ward Clerks to join our NICU family at Bradford Teaching Hospitals

At BRI NICU we care for the sickest, smallest and earliest babies from birth through to discharge and pride ourselves on our exceptionally high standards of care.

Accredited as the first NICU in the country to achieve UNICEF Baby Friendly Neonatal Standards we are very proud of the parents as partners in care ethos that underpins every aspect of the care we deliver to babies and their families within the service.

Ward Clerks are a vital part of our NICU team as they are family facing and front of house. Successful candidates will work as part of an established team carrying out administrative duties, welcoming families and also ensuring that high levels of infection, prevention and control standards are adhered to.

Main duties of the job

The prime responsibilities of the post holder will be to assist the nursing teams of the department with a variety of administrative and clerical duties.

The successful applicants will work as part of a team and be responsible for the provision of a high quality administrative service to the Neonatal Service.

Being front of house and first point of contact with the families resident on our unit the successful candidate will be responsible for making all visitors to the unit feel welcome and acknowledged.

Job responsibilities

This is a key post in the provision of clerical and administrative support to the Neonatal Intensive Care based at BRI. The clerk is an important and integral part of the team and applicants must be willing and able to act on their own initiative and organise their workload effectively and efficiently.

Successful candidates will be friendly, welcoming to families, talkative and able to politely challenge when people entering the unit fail to wash their hands.

  • Assist in the completion of ward statistics for the Patient Services Manager and for Patient Administration.
  • Make or request follow up appointments for patients before discharge and arrange transport as and when necessary.
  • Answer the telephone, take messages and ensure they are passed in a timely manner to the correct person.
  • Act as the ward receptionist, welcoming patients and relatives, offering help and advice and ensuring that each patient is supplied with relevant written information.
  • Improving patient / family experience.
  • Ensure that the stationary supplies for the ward are kept stocked and that all areas under the clerks direct influence are kept clean and tidy.
  • Assist when necessary with the ordering, maintenance and putting away of supplies.
  • Clerically support the nursing staff.
  • Distribute and collect Friends and Family cards (patient feedback)
  • Record compliments on the Datix system.
  • Contribute to the prevention of accidents and untoward incidents within the care environment.
  • Participate in training or attend study days as and when required.
  • Act as fire warden when requested to do so.
  • Any other duties, which may be allocated to the post.
