Job summary

CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDIC AND TRAUMA SURGEON - to be part of a general trauma rota, with a sub-specialist interest in Hand & Wrist surgery (with upper limb trauma)Applications are invited for a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma with a sub-specialist special interest in Hand & Wrist surgery.We are looking for candidate to join our department of 15 consultant orthopaedic surgeons. The successful candidate will be part of the general on call rota, and will be supported in developing their sub-specialist interest, working alongside the orthopaedic and plastic hand surgical consultants plus flexibly providing support of their orthopaedic upper limb colleagues.The orthopaedic hand service sees the full breadth of hand & wrist conditions and provides specialist input to a large Rheumatology department in addition to Neurology. There is collaboration between the Orthopaedic and Plastic Hand Surgeons and with our Upper Limb specialists, with regular MDT clinics with our specialist paramedical teams. We are fully supported by ESP Hand and Shoulder therapists plus our well-staffed hand therapy service. We are also a tertiary hand trauma centre and register with FESSH, this is staffed by our Plastic Surgery Team.The successful candidate will be welcomed into a friendly unit and encouraged to contribute to the general work of the department including undergraduate and post-graduate teaching, research, clinical management and effective team working.

Main duties of the job

The post is primarily aimed at supporting the hand & upper limb services. The post holder will be on the general on call rota and will be expected to be competent in all aspects of the management of general Orthopaedic trauma care. As a large department complex injuries are triaged within normal working hours to have definitive management under colleagues with the appropriate sub-specialist interest and skill set. Hand and wrist (plus upper limb) trauma constitutes a significant workload for the department and the successful candidate would be expected to contribute to the sub-specialist management of these patients.
