Job summary

We are looking to appoint a Specialty Doctor with a keen interest and experience in both Stroke Medicine and Neurology, working across both disciplines to support the services. At Bradford Teaching Hospitals the inpatient services for Stroke and Neurology are co-located, and therefore this role will support patients from both specialties in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. We would be delighted to hear from applicants who have significant experience at ST3+ level in delivering elective and non-elective care to patients in both these specialties and are able to carry out procedures unsupervised such as thrombolysis and lumbar punctures. Experience in delivering TIA clinics and general neurology outpatient clinics is essential.

It is an exciting time for the service as we have recently opened a new stroke and neuro rehabilitation unit to complement our existing 27 bedded HASU/ASU and neurology unit.

The successful applicant will join a well-established, successful, enthusiastic multidisciplinary team of medical staff, specialist nurses, physicians associates, ward based nurses and therapists. You will have the opportunity to participate in the development of services in providing excellent care to the patients of Bradford.

The successful post holder would be supported with a mentor, and we are all highly approachable.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a speciality doctor to provide day to day care and support to stroke and neurology patients with the continued transformation of the services in line with our strategy. This will include;

  • In-patient and out-patient care for patients referred with suspected stroke or TIA or other neurological conditions
  • To participate in clinical and other activities such audit, research and governance with the object of ensuring ongoing high standards of patient care
  • To assist with TIA clinics and neurology outpatient clinics
  • To assist in delivering our stroke services including acute stroke unit, stroke rehabilitation, TIA clinic and stroke thrombolysis
  • To assist in delivering our neurology services including lumbar puncture, inpatient ward rounds and outpatient clinics

This post will be a new post for the department. Bradford Teaching Hospitals is very supportive and inclusive of specialty/specialist doctors. Whilst this is not a training post, every opportunity will be afforded the post holder to develop their skills and continue their medical education.

  • First class opportunity to undertake clinical assessment of a suspected stroke or TIA in an adult patient referred as an emergency to hospital or in an out-patient setting.
  • Arranging and interpreting appropriate investigations, self-sufficiency in imaging like brain scan and carotid Doppler to support or exclude diagnosis of a suspected stroke or TIA and its cause.
  • The management of TIA and common stroke mimics with current and emerging interventional management of patients undergoing cerebral reperfusion therapies in acute ischemic stroke.

Neurology Service

  • Independently delivering general neurology outpatient clinics, with supervision from consultants.

  • Contribute to post-discharge medical care, rehabilitation and longer term social and vocational integration.
