Job summary

The Clinical fellow in orthopaedics and trauma will work alongside Core Trainees and Foundation Year doctors on the junior rota. Duties will involve the medical and orthopaedic management of orthopaedic patients, the assessment of patients in the Emergency Department and assisting in theatre.

The orthopaedic department is committed to education and training with a teaching programme for juniors and journal club. Trainees are encouraged to attend fracture clinic and outpatients. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in departmental audit and research activity.

o Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.o Assisting with teaching and training of junior staff and medical studentso To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.o To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

Main duties of the job

  • Management of orthopaedic patients under post-holder's consultant's care.
  • Conducting of orthopaedic clinics under the supervision of the Consultant.
  • Undertake theatre lists on orthopaedic patients under the supervision of a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.
  • To participate in the management of the Department, ensuring that appropriate deputising arrangement are made and supervising the day-to-day clinical work of the CT's and FY2's in the department.
  • Commited to maintaining a high standard of note-keeping and communication with General Practitioners. He/she will be involved in preparing information for entry onto the Electronic patient Record.In preparing Discharge Summaries of patient's under the care of the consultant for whom he/she is working at the time.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade which may be allocated from time to time.
  • Undertake pre-operative assessment and obtain consent for procedures.
  • Supporting Professional Activities.
  • Participate in and contribute towards the teaching programme of medical and non-medical staff e.g.; journal clubs, tutorials, lectures, clinical meetings.
  • Keep up-to-date records to satisfy continuous professional development requirements. Assist in Trust clinical risk management requirements.
  • Undertake research, if desired, as directed by supervising consultant for the directorate.
  • Clinical Management duties as delegated and agreed by the lead clinician or clinical director.
  • Attend daily trauma meeting

The post-holder is expected to be committed to maintaining a high standard of note-keeping and communication with General Practitioners. He/she will be involved in preparing information for entry to the hospital's Clinical Information System and in preparing Discharge Summaries of patient's under the care of the consultant for whom he/she is working at the time.

Any other duties commensurate with the grade which may be allocated from time to time.
