Job summary

Hours: 37 1/2 hours per week (working across a prescribed shift pattern ensuring cover 24 hours a day/365 days a year)

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and competent individual to undertake a multi-skilled role to carry out maintenance, repairs and inspection of building, mechanical and electrical services, associated systems, plant and equipment in accordance with relevant standards, legislative requirements and operational procedures.

The successful applicant will work in a small team on a rotating shift pattern providing 24 hour planned and breakdown response to the Foundation Trust's maintenance requirements. The successful applicant will need to be flexible to cover for colleagues during periods of leave to maintain continued service on the shift pattern.

Main duties of the job

Applicants will be able to work alone and as part of a team, and will assist the Team Leaders in leading and supervising the Estates Department's trades staff and external contractors. They will provide support, advice and assistance to qualified, semi-skilled staff and contractors to ensure that the Foundation Trust's assets are running efficiently, premises maintained in accordance with statutory, NHS Trust and departmental guidelines.

Summary of most important Experience/Skills/Qualifications required:

Applicants must have:

  • Completed a recognised electrical or mechanical apprenticeship such as EITB, CITB or equivalent, approved apprenticeship scheme.
  • City & Guilds - Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Completed an appropriate multi-skilling course to City & Guilds level or equivalent, or must have appropriate multi-skilling experience.
  • Formal training, ideally in an engineering discipline to HNC/HND level, or commensurate level of experience.
  • Experience of engineering and building techniques.
  • Competent in the use of computers including Microsoft Office.

  • Competent in the use of computers including Microsoft Office
  • Previously worked within a maintenance environment.
  • Have an understanding of the operational procedures and safe working practices of major items of plant and systems such as: -Steam raising plant & associated systems. -Steam and condense systems. -Heating and domestic water services. -Ventilation plant and associated systems. -Low voltage electrical distribution system and switchgear. -Emergency standby generating plant. -Fire alarm and detection systems. -Lighting systems (including emergency lighting.) -Lifts. -Nurse call system.
  • Have an awareness of the operational procedures and safe working practices of major items of plant and systems, such as: -Gas distribution system. -Sterilisation and decontamination equipment. -Medical gas pipeline system and associated plant. -Diesel Oil systems. -Building Management System (BMS) -Security System.
  • Experience must cover engineering and building techniques.
  • Experience of direct management of qualified labour force
  • Experienced in risk management, including undertaking audits, risk assessments, method statements, undertaking authorised persons duties and issuing/managing permit to work systems.
