Job summary
We are looking for an Obstetrician with a special interest in Maternal Medicine and High risk pregnancies.
A key element of this role is to support the existing multidisciplinary maternal medicine clinics as well as high risk antenatal clinics. We aim to support the delivery of in situ multidisciplinary Obstetric simulation and our inhouse Practical Obstetric Multi-professional Training PROMPT.
The job will also include a regular caesarean section list, a weekday antenatal ward round and a weekly session with our Ambulatory Care Unit.
At present there are 23 Consultant posts in the department; There are 4 pure Consultant Obstetricians on the Out of hours on call Obstetric rota and currently 3 pure Consultant Gynaecologists on the Gynaecology on call rota as well as 14 consultants who cover both Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The advertised post currently includes non-resident (after 10 pm) on call element for Obstetrics.
The Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust serves a female population of approximately 250,000 and there are around 5400 births per year in the unit. Approximately 50% of our women are from an ethnic background, mainly from Pakistan and India.
Despite having a high-risk obstetric population, our delivery statistics and clinical outcomes are consistently good delivering around 5,500 babies each year with a normal vaginal birth rate of approximately 67% and a caesarean section rate of around 23%.
Main duties of the job
There are daily consultant led obstetric ward rounds and elective Caesarean section lists as well as consultant presence in the Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC) and Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU) to ensure patient safety and timely patient review and management. As well as general antenatal clinics, there are also a wide range of existing specialist high risk antenatal clinics for women with diabetes, haematological problems, perinatal mental health problems, multiple pregnancy, infectious diseases, epilepsy with support also for women requiring dietetic and healthy lifestyle advice and a pregnancy related bereavement support team.
All Obstetric services are delivered at the Bradford Royal Infirmary site.
The Trust is a teaching centre for the University Of Leeds School Of Medicine and the department has a good reputation for providing high quality undergraduate and postgraduate education and training, with ATSM training offered in most modules. Successful applicants will be expected to contribute to these teaching programmes. There is also a strong emphasis on clinical research and a high calibre research group within the unit.
In addition to regular daytime sessions, Consultants in the department work flexible clinical sessions to prospectively cover caesarean section lists and clinics. The job plan will include a mix of fixed and flexible sessions.
Applications will be welcomed from all suitably qualified Obstetricians.
About us
There will be an on call Obstetric commitment with this post which will include joining the existing on call consultants on a 1:17 rota. There are plans in the future to split the on call with a separate consultant on call 24 hours a day for both Obstetrics and Gynaecology. All posts will be non-resident. The appointment will allow us to maintain our capacity to deliver 98 hours of consultant labour ward cover per week.
The consultant presence on labour ward is delivered throughout the week, with a consultant on site 08:00-22:00 each day. A hot week labour ward consultant provides labour ward cover 0800-1700 5 days a week and each week night is covered by different consultants arriving in the unit at 1700 and being present in the unit from 1700-2200. After 22:00, on call consultant cover is delivered on a non-resident basis.
This post will also provide regular consultant led antenatal ward rounds to ensure consultant decision making for high risk inpatient obstetric patients as well as having regular sessions dedicated to the ambulatory Obstetric areas. Our Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC) and Antenatal Day Unit ( ANDU) review and manage high risk women and the workload is highly variable but we see on average 1400 women per month through these areas.
