Job summary

Applications are invited to apply for the post of Consultant in Haematology at Bradford Teaching Hospitals. This is a 10PA post in Haematology with the possibility of a second additional post in the near future. Bradford is situated in a truly beautiful area of the world with easy access to the Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors. There are excellent schools including Bradford Grammar School (within 5 minutes of the hospital) and Woodhouse Grove (within 5 minutes of the Day Unit). There is great walking and cycling in the area.

The Haematology Team in Bradford has an extremely strong ethos on caring for patients and caring for each other. It believes in delivering the highest and best standards of care and this goal is achieved best by supporting staff in the team reaching their full potential. Consultants with a family or who would wish to work part-time or as a job share would be very welcome to apply. The team work very closely together to ensure that specialist interests in specific areas can be developed and supported though study leave, mentoring and external training. There are many potential opportunities in career development available including in malignant haematology, haemophilia, thrombosis and research depending on the skill set and interests of the applicant.

Main duties of the job

Bradford hospital is a large teaching hospital and teaching opportunities are abundant for the successful candidate. The department has medical students and also does lectures for medical students in Leeds. There is a large simulation training centre with a SIM-MAN and clinical rooms. The department runs twice yearly simulation training for the Yorkshire Region including specialist coagulation practical training. Further development of training is possible.

The individual will join the team of 5 Consultant haematologists, middle grades (2 Specialty Doctors, 1 CT3, 3 SpR) and 3 Junior doctors (FY1, FY2 and CT2). There is a designated 12 bed haematology ward with en-suite side rooms and a treatment room. The doctors are supported by a team of Acute Oncology Nurses, malignant CNS, non-malignant CNS, transfusion CNS, thrombosis CNS, 3research CNS, ANP and an amazing dedicated team of nurses on the ward and day unit. Treatment offered is to BCSH level 2c including ALL, AML and high grade lymphomas. All Consultants sub-specialise with cross cover provided. Clinics are disease specific (e.g. Myeloid, Lymphoma, Thrombosis, ITP, Paediatric, Obstetric etc..) and usually have at least 2 Consultants in to enable appropriate cover arrangements.

About us

There is a large Haemophilia Centre with special interest in rare coagulation and platelet disorders. It forms part of the regional haemophilia network with Leeds and York (NWYHN). MDTs are held every 8 weeks and there is 24/7 Haemophilia Consultant on-call cover for the region separate to the local on-call arrangements.

The haematology department is very fortunate to have excellent supportive services as you would expect for a large teaching hospital including hepatology, microbiology, palliative care and interventional radiology.
