Job summary
This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate who wishes to develop their advanced Upper GI understanding and laparoscopic skill prior to taking a consultant position, particularly in relation to advanced hiatal surgery (Fundoplication/LINX/Heller's Myotomy/Giant Para-oesophageal hernia repair) and laparoscopic common bile duct exploration. The post will allow the development of skills and decision making in emergency Upper GI surgery at consultant level. Additionally there is research/publication opportunity and the post provides a computer and office to support this.
Main duties of the job
This post is flexible in training supervision, although primarily aimed at a post CCT level candidates who are looking to consolidate and advance their upper GI surgical skills before taking up a consultant job. For an exceptional candidate at a pre-CCT level, the post can be tailored to suit their learning requirements.

About us
The UGI department consists of 7 Consultant UGI surgeons and 3 Laparoscopic Nurse Specialists, as well as rotating Junior doctors and administrative/managerial support staff. We have a national reputation for the level of training and hands-on opportunities we provide in advanced UGI surgery. We have an established acute cholecystectomy service with a nationally leading laparoscopic bile duct exploration and laparoscopic ultrasound service as treatment for emergency and elective presentation of choledocholithiasis. We also have an established elective and emergency hiatal surgery practice. The Department delivers a Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation (LINX) service and trains in the procedure. The Department has an advanced pH/Manometry service, offering high resolution manometry and BRAVO, with the opportunity in post for the successful candidate to gain tutelage in the interpretation of pH/manometry testing. We run a monthly benign Upper GI MDT for management of complex benign hepatobiliary and hiatal cases, with which the post holder will be expected to demonstrate engagement and utilization of this learning opportunity. We also contribute to the General Surgery on call rota, providing a parallel Upper GI service dealing with a wide range of emergency Upper GI surgical problems.
