Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) Health Visiting.

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust are delighted to offer a suitable applicant an exciting opportunity to develop their career by undertaking Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) Health Visitor training. This is offered as a fixed term contract for 12 months starting in September 2025.

Main duties of the job

  • To work towards gaining the standards of proficiency for entry to the NMC register Part 3.
  • Full-time study commencing September 2025 for 12 months.
  • 50% of the course is academic delivered at MSc level by the University of the West England (UWE).
  • Travel to Bristol will be required for study sessions.
  • 50% of the course will be delivered locally within Torbay.

  • The Torbay 0 to 19 Partnership is a collaboration between health visiting, school nursing and Action for Children. The student SCPHN will work alongside a practice assessor and supervisor who will offer support and learning outcomes for practice. Students will be based within a 0-19 Team in Torbay. During this time skills will be developed to enable the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme in a variety of community settings, including the family home environment, children's centres, schools and nurseries, whilst working as part of a skill mix team.

Under supervision, assess, plan, implement and evaluate the provision of care for clients in accordance with the principles and practice of health visiting.

To complete work-based skills assessments agreed in partnership with the University and the Trust.

To adhere to learning contracts agreed with Practice Assessor and Academic in Practice, taking responsibility for adult learning.

To work effectively as a team member and independently, both at University and in clinical practice.

To attend all formal education and informal work-based learning sessions as directed by the University, submitting all assignments as required.

To establish a working relationship with a Practice Assessor and Supervisor throughout the course.

To agree a programme of learning and negotiate learning objectives with Practice Assessor to enable the embedding of theoretical learning in practice.

To work within the agreed programme to achieve the Nursing and Midwifery Councils proficiency standards identified in the practice portfolio.
