Job responsibilities

Specialty Doctor:

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of emergency services.

Shared responsibility for the day to day management of the clinical areas.

Responsible for providing high quality leadership and effective team working.

Teaching and training of junior doctors, nurses and other staff.

Responsible for active participation in continuing medical education.

Participate in audit and quality assurance processes.

Participate in a full shift rota. We also fully support SAS Doctors to be appraisors and Clinical and Education Supervisors as agreed and reflected in the job planning process.

CESR pathway within Torbay Emergency Department:

We currently have 3 Doctors who are working towards CESR accreditation. For these doctors we provide a CESRd consultant as an educational and clinical supervisor who helps guide and supervise portfolio and evidence gathering. We offer the opportunity to have a placement per year, with Acute Medicine, Intensive Care, Anaesthetics and Paediatrics, should you require this, which provides the chance to gain the relevant competencies for CESR completion. We have very good links within these specialty teams and have a good working relationship as time in other specialties also helps build positive relationships within the trust. A CESR trainee is encouraged to join teaching opportunities and gain learning experiences alongside other trainees in the department.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration with GMC, with licence to practice and permitting work as a Senior Doctor in Emergency Medicine
  • Specialty Doctor - 4 years full time (or equivalent part time) post grad training, at least 2 years worked in Emergency Medicine (including relevant overseas work)
  • OR Specialist Doctor - 12 years post-grad full time (or equivalent), at least 5-years working in Emergency Medicine (including relevant overseas work)
  • ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS certification, or a commitment to attend these courses within 6 months of appointment

Desirable

  • Higher qualification ie FRCEM Primary or Intermediate, MRCP, MRCPG, MRCS, FRCA or equivalent
  • Teaching of junior dental and nursing staff
  • Experience in Anaesthetics, General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics or Orthopaedic Surgery

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in audit, and an ongoing willingness to be involved in the audit programme of the department

Desirable

  • Previous publications and presentations
  • A desire to publish scientific papers
