Job summary

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust has recently become one of the first vertically-integrated health and care organisations in the country. The development of an Integrated Care Organisation,(ICO) through the acquisition of Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust by South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has now taken place and is one of the major enablers in the transformation of services, and developing a new approach to health and social care. The Trust runs Torbay Hospital as well as Community Hospitals and hubs across Devon, we employ approximately 6,000 staff. Main duties of the job

Clinical duties will be shared with present Consultants and will include all responsibilities normally expected in any major Emergency Department in the UK. The appointee will ensure that there is efficient and effective reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and management of all emergencies attending the department. Emergency patients are promptly assessed and early decisions are made as to whether to admit to inpatient beds, operating theatres or specialist units, and to other hospitals when necessary, or to arrange early discharge. The appointee will ensure that there is good liaison with other specialities to provide the highest standard of care to patients attending the department. Patients requiring follow-up are referred to the appropriate outpatient clinic or to the care of their GP and that their discharge information keeps their GP informed of the outcome of Emergency attendances.

  • Whilst they are on duty they maintain an overview of the flow of emergency patients through the Directorate.
  • Work pro-actively with the re-enablement team (physio, OT and social worker) within the Directorate to safely manage the early discharge of Emergency patients from the Emergency department.
  • Provide excellent training environment is maintained for all clinical staff.
  • It is expected that the post holder will undertake routine daily clinical work alongside the junior medical staff, in order to monitor, audit and improve standards of care of patients attending the department.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • That whilst they are on duty they maintain an overview of the flow of emergency patients through the Directorate.

Junior Staff: Recruitment, appointment and educational supervision including educational contracts, regular appraisal, organisation of study leave, annual leave and rotas.

Budget: Co-operate with the Deputy Medical Director and Divisional General Manager on budget issues.

Communication: This will include the responsibility for and arrangement of communication and liaison with all other medical and service departments within the Trust as well as other Trusts.

Teaching: To have an active role in the junior doctor training programme.

WEEKLY TIMETABLE / JOB PLAN

Consultants work 10 PAs split 7.5 DCC and 2.5 SPAs. Job plan allocations and detail are as set out in the recommendations of the BMA and the RCEM.

ON-CALL COMMITMENTS

When on call, the Emergency Consultants are responsible for the patients within the department. The Consultant on call will be expected to return for any Trauma calls and to respond to the needs of the medical team as required. With the appointment of the successful applicant the rota will be 1 in 10 on-call with 1 in 5 weekend on-call. Weekend on-calls are split between 2 consultants.
