Job summary

To support Registered Practitioners and Assistant Practitioners in caring for patients in the immediate post operative phase, high dependency patients, paediatric patients, and care of the elderly as needed.

To maintain a safe environment for all patients attending theatres and PACU

To carry out post- operative care within scope of practice and work with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.

To care for patients as delegated by Registered Staff and to work at all times within scope of practice.

To maintain a tidy, well stocked environment

Main duties of the job

To support the PACU Practitioners in caring for post operative patients during their immediate recovery.

Take observations of post operative patients maintaining clear and accurate documentation

Provide personal care for patients as and when required

Maintain a safe, tidy and appropriately stocked environment

Be a transit practitioner from and to wards to assist in the patient flow through the department.

Be accountable for caring for patients in the immediate post operative period as delegated by the Team Leader

About us

PACU is the lynch pin of the Inpatient Theatre Department and is responsible for timely patient flow of post operative patients within the remits of their clinical need.

The Team is made up of a Band 7, 3 Band 6's, Registered and Unregistered Staff who work collaboratively to provide best patient care across the 24 hour period, 7 days a week. We also have an in house Practice educator who supports and encourages learning.

Staff are actively encouraged to develop academically and professionally to meet individual ambition as well as that of the department.

Rotation in to Theatres and across all disciplines within the Theatre complex is actively encouraged

Job description

Job responsibilities

Work collaboratively with other professionals to ensure that the arrival and departure of patients in the PACU suite, is in accordance with policy.

To develop effective communication with the multidisciplinary team, relatives, other nursing staff, ward staff, the wider hospital community and Theatre Practitioners to ensure they receive clear and accurate information.

To participate in team building/communication activities to develop a cohesive, supportive and effective team.

Collaborate and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings as required.

Engage all stakeholders

Report incidents as required under supervision of Registered Staff

Ensure that communication remains pivotal to all elements of the caring profession.

Work closely with all stakeholders to create a positive Patient experience.

Work with wards, departments and Theatre staff to ensure a co-ordinated pathway for patient care.

Work with Medical and multidisciplinary team in other departments.

Perform routine daily activities, acting as a member of the multidisciplinary team during routine operating lists.

Support Registered Staff and Assistant Practitioners in their comprehensive assessment of patients post-operative care.

Provide care delivery according to patients healthcare needs and within own scope of practice.

To demonstrate high standards of practice.

To assist Registered and Assistant Practitioners in completing patients paperwork and individual care plans under supervision

Recognise and respond to emergency situations

To act with professionalism and integrity, being a role model to those around us and ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity.

Ensures that documentation electronic and hard copy is produced/delivered/stored in compliance with trust protocols and guidelines.

Assist in inputting patients IT data as required, and maintain appropriate charts/records ensuring escalation to senior staff as necessary
