Job overview

The Care and Support Worker will work within a day service setting supporting people who have a wide range of learning, physical and health needs and also includes people who need support when they become distressed. You will participate in and access activities in the centre and the community and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team working with people who attend Hollacombe, their parents, carers and other professionals'. You will provide support in accordance with individuals care plans and carry out tasks allocated by the senior team.

You will act as an escort on a minibus with up to 8 other passengers with a tail lift and have responsibility alongside the driver for the safe transportation of people to and from the day service.

The service operates within the policies and procedures of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and relevant national legislation and guidance e.g. Valuing People Now, Mental Capacity Act, and Safeguarding Adults etc.

  • Manual handling, Epilepsy, First Aid, Health & Safety one day courses

Desirable

  • Level 2 in Health & Social Care
  • Specialist Training usually one- or two-day level in: Total Communication, Person Centred Awareness, Risk Assessment, Autism

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • To have an ability to build a good rapport with people, many of whom have barriers to communication, e.g. may not use verbal communication
  • To be able to understand and use a Person-Centred approach when working with people. To be able to express ideas in a way which is understandable to others whatever their needs. To be able to work unsupervised with an individual or within a group, both within the centre and in the community
  • To accept and value the differing wishes and lifestyles of individuals and their Carers
  • To have an understanding of Equal Opportunities and how to support people to make choices
  • To be able to record accurately in daily records
  • To communicate and co-operate with colleagues, parents/carers at all times to ensure individuals receive consistent support
  • Ability to take responsibility for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of people whilst on a journey thereby allowing the driver to concentrate on the road
