About us
Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2015, when Torbay Hospital merged with Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust, the Trust that provided community health and social care services.
Both organisations have a history of working closely together but prior to this each organisation had its own history.
Torbay Hospital dates back to 1928, when it was built on the edge of Torbay. Known previously as South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, it was one of the first NHS Trusts (established in 1991) and was authorised as one of the early NHS Foundation Trusts in 2007, and has a large public membership.
Torbay and South Devon and was one of just five integrated health and social care organisations in the country, when it started back in 2005 as Torbay Care Trust. The Trust built its model of care around a fictional character called Mrs Smith by creating integrated health and adult social care services.
Why work with us - Torbay Hospital provides acute care for the local community and has several community hospitals, and is a hot-spot for those who are considering living by the sea or within half an hour of Dartmoor National Park and an hour to Exmoor National Park. Meanwhile, Plymouth and Exeter are also both within a short drive to enjoy the culture, maritime history and shopping experiences.
