Here at Torbay Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) we are a small yet well-established team that are passionate about delivering high quality family centred care to neonates & their families.

We are looking for an individual to join our team providing exceptional nursing care to babies and their families as a Band 4 Neonatal Nursery Nurse to provide care to babies and their families from 32 weeks gestation. Elsewhere, you will provide stabilisation for babies born before this gestation, or critically ill term neonates prior to retrieval by the Peninsula Neonatal Transport Team.

We are a fast-paced Level 1 unit providing 10 cots in total comprising of 2 HDU cots and 8 Special Care cots, with a Transitional Care Service in development therefore, the ideal candidate will possess an NVQ Level 3 or an equivalent qualification (NNEB) in early years childcare, and have recent experience working with infants and families (within a hospital environment, can include experience gained within Neonatal Units, Paediatric Wards or Post Natal Maternity Wards/ TCW).

The unit operates an 11.5hr shift system covering days/nights/weekends/bank holidays. Therefore, you will be contracted to work 37.5 hours per week although part time hours will be considered.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the delivery of effective, high quality neonatal care to infants requiring Special Care/Transitional Care under the supervision of a registered nurse following a holistic, family centred model of practice
  • Undertakes direct patient care to babies requiring Special/TCW Care within the scope of NVQ Level 3 qualification (or NNEB equivalent) under the supervision of a trained nurse.
  • Competent in the use of specific medical devices required for the provision of Special/TCW Care
  • Contributes to resource management within the Special Care/TCW setting

Job responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for individual patient care under the supervision of a trained nurse, as allocated by the Nurse in Charge.
  • Implement and evaluate the agreed plan of care, review and update plan accordingly
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, and evaluate care in relation to infant hygiene, nutritional care, thermoregulatory care, observation and monitoring and undertake associated practical aspects within sphere of responsibility.
  • Competent in all forms of heel prick blood sampling to include Blood sugars, Neonatal Bilirubin and Neonatal routine blood sampling. Take responsibility for chasing and charting results, and ensuring nurse in charge and medical staff are informed of all results.
  • Competent to assist Drs in holding for cannulation and securing of cannula as per unit policy
  • Competent to assist in holding for babies undergoing Lumbar Punctures, x-rays and Retinopathy of Prematurity eye screening examination.
  • Competent to place ECG leads in the appropriate position for a baby undergoing an ECG recording.
  • Support newly appointed Nursery Nurses/Neonatal Assistants
  • Attend all statutory, essential, mandatory training and complete annual Trust e-learning packages
  • Demonstrate responsibility for professional development by:
    • Promoting a positive working environment
    • Completion of Band 4 Neonatal Competency booklet
    • Participating in annual Personal Achievement Review
    • Working within agreed guidelines, protocols and procedures and ensure that all Trust and Directorate nursing policies and practices are adhered to
    • Ensuring that all clinical and legal documents completed by nursery nurses are both accurate and legible and that nurses understand their relevance and nature of confidentiality
