Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, enthusiastic individual to work as a full time Rehabilitation Support Worker within stroke and neurological rehabilitation on a Permanent contract.

Why work with us - The post will be a rotational post working on the George Earle Acute stroke ward, Templer ward rehabilitation Unit and within the Community Neuro Rehab Teams. The Stroke and neuro Unit at Newton Abbot Hospital has 20 stroke and 5 neurology beds and provides post-acute inpatient stroke rehabilitation prior to discharge to the community. The acute stroke unit is at Torbay Hospital, providing acute stroke care and assessment. The community team supports ongoing rehabilitation in peoples own homes and in the outpatient department. The service is part of the continuum of care in South Devon and has been recognised nationally as an example of good practice.

You will work alongside qualified physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists in delivering rehabilitation programmes. You will need to be hard working and physically able to move and handle patients.

Main duties of the job

The primary function of this role is to ensure that opportunities for patients to rehabilitate are optimised during their stay in the stroke units or with the community neuro team. Under the direction of the interdisciplinary team the post-holder will:

  • Assist registered staff in assessment and therapy tasks
  • Move/treat/communicate with patients in accordance with the therapy plan.
  • Implement treatment plans agreed with registered therapy staff, including overseeing and assisting with physical exercise, personal care (e.g. washing, toileting) and practice of domestic activities of daily living and the use of technologies such as computing, and supporting communication and safe swallowing.
  • As part of their rehabilitation, work with patients with cognitive and/or perceptual difficulties
  • Train and educate patients, carers and families under the direction of registered staff

You will have excellent communication skills and already have some experience in rehabilitation. You need to be an effective team worker, and be prepared to participate in a service where all staff contribute to delivery of personal care as well as providing formal rehabilitation sessions.

The service operates 7 days a week, so some weekend work on a rota basis is a requirement of the post.
