Band 7 Senior Sister - Intensive Care Unit

An opportunity has arisen in the Intensive Care department at Torbay Hospital to recruit a Senior Sister in ICU.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, highly skilled Intensive care nurse to manage services within ICU in order that patients receive high quality evidence-based care. They will work collaboratively with the Matron and other Band 7 nurses to develop the service and deliver a positive patient experience.

This position will allow you to work alongside an existing established experienced team, providing clinical nurse management, clinical leadership and expertise in all aspects of Intensive care nursing, including Outreach.

You will be proficient in Intensive care nursing and able to utilise your clinical expertise and specialist knowledge working as an innovator capable of leading change in clinical practice and work closely with other senior leaders to develop and improve services.

You will need exceptional interpersonal, communication, decision making and organisational skills, along with stamina and flexibility in order to meet the demands of the role and a flexible working pattern. You will also have extensive experience at Band 6 working within Intensive Care.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide clinical nurse management, clinical leadership and expertise in all aspects of Intensive Care Nursing, including Outreach, within sphere of responsibility.
  • The post holder, with support from ICU Matron, will ensure that high standards of excellence are developed, implemented, evaluated and maintained, with required change planned in accordance with the framework of Clinical Governance.
  • To lead by example, acting as a role model to all members of the nursing team and create a positive learning environment. Supervise all nursing staff effectively.
  • Act as an expert resource on nursing care of patients within Intensive Care and hold a key role in the multidisciplinary team.
  • Support and facilitate the Band 6 Practice Educators to provide education and training to the nursing team.
  • Support and facilitate the Band 6 Sisters/Charge nurses to provide Critical care outreach 24/7 throughout the Trust and co-ordinate the development and audit of the service, embedding national recommendations, thus enhancing care of the critically ill patients within the trust.

About us

The Intensive Care Unit is a fourteen bedded unit which admits level 2 and 3 patients requiring complex care needs moving on to meet their rehabilitation needs both within the unit and on their continuing journey to the ward and then home.

The multidisciplinary team work collaboratively to ensure the patients needs are met compassionately and to a high standard with the goal of helping patients achieve their optimum level of health post critical illness or a peaceful death.
