Job summary

The nurse led Pain Service combines Inpatient and Outpatient services. This is a fantastic opportunity to join our dynamic, friendly and forward-thinking team to further develop the service. We provide clinical support/advice to members of staff in the management of patients' pain.

You will have experience in: acute nursing; management with a current working practice in a pain service, having achieved Registered Nurse (Level 1) with a non-medical prescribing qualification with clinical skills and knowledge to deliver patient centred evidence based care.

You should have a deep understanding/knowledge in: managing acute, chronic, complex pain and psychological aspects of pain including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Continuing to develop a variety of educational initiatives and work alongside the wider pain management team, different teams in the acute and community setting such as GPs, pharmacists and advanced nurse practitioners. Also,contribute to the implementation of international, national and local strategies in pain management working collaboratively with colleagues to ensure best practice.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as an expert in pain management; develop inpatient/outpatient pain services through expertise, evidence based practice, policy and guideline development.
  • To assist, advise and support clinical teams to provide optimum pain management.
  • Providing clinical leadership to nurses and expert professional advice to healthcare professional, patients and carers.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness/ safety of clinical interventions in pain management and adjust accordingly
  • The timely assessment, implementation of plans of care and management/ review of patients requiring pain management
  • Undertake, develop and run clinics that involve follow up and review of, e.g. TENS/ modulators; Patient pain diaries; Lidocaine infusion service; outpatient pain clinics: this list is not exhausted
  • Deputises for the Lead nurse/ Matron in their absence, and supports the Lead Nurse within the service
  • To assist in development, organisation and delivery of the pain management educational strategy
  • Acts as a positive role model for Trust staff and students by maintaining good leadership and communication skills
  • Promote awareness and compliance amongst colleagues regarding Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards
  • Develops policy, practice and service change arising from audits, research, complaints etc.
  • Develop new skills and knowledge pertaining to pain management
  • To ensure local standards for pain management reflect international and national guidelines
  • To support the wider Trust nurse agenda

About us

The nurse led Pain Service in Torbay combines our Inpatient and Outpatient Pain Services.We cover both the acute and chronic services in Torbay and is part of the Critical Care and Anaesthetic departments. It provides clinical support and advice Trust wide in the management of patients' pain.

There are close links with a variety of educational initiatives within the Trust and the successful candidate is expected to continue and develop these. They will work within the wider pain management team.

  • To demonstrate excellent skills in taking patients pain history through medical notes, verbal report and interrogation of investigations
  • To be concise and unambiguous in recommendations for the treatment of pain and document clearly in the patients notes
