Job responsibilities

Torbay and South Devon Upper GI Unit, Torbay Hospital is looking to appoint a candidate to the Royal College of Surgeons approved Upper GI Surgical Fellowship for a period of 12 months.

The department is involved in General Surgery on call, providing a parallel Upper GI on-call rota dealing with a wide range of emergency Upper GI surgical problems.

This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate who wishes to develop their advanced upper GI laparoscopic skill prior to taking a consultant position, particularly in relation to advanced hiatal surgery (Fundoplication/Hellers Myotomy/Giant Para-oesophageal hernia repair). There would be opportunity for the candidate to start or develop their laparoscopic bile duct exploration skills. The post will allow the development of skills and decision making in emergency Upper GI surgery at consultant level. There is a large amount of research/publication opportunity and the post provides a computer and office to support this.

There is extensive experience of laparoscopic abdominal wall hernia repair within the department and opportunity to develop this would be provided and encouraged.

We have an established acute cholecystectomy service with a nationally leading laparoscopic bile duct exploration and laparoscopic ultrasound service as treatment for emergency and elective presentation of choledocholithiasis.

We have an established elective and emergency hiatal surgery practice.

There is a benign Upper GI MDT for management of complex benign hepatobiliary/oesophago-gastric and long term nutrition access disorders.

The Department delivers a Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation (LINX) service and trains in the procedure

We run Royal College of Surgeons accredited Advanced Laparoscopic Upper GI Surgical Courses in Bile Duct Exploration and Hiatal Hernia surgery, British Benign Upper GI Society (BBUGSS) website. We are looking to expand our course portfolio.

The Department also has an advance pH/Manometry service, offering high resolution manometry and BRAVO

Qualifications

Essential

• Full GMC with licence to practice
• Full GMC with licence to practice
• Able to manage a general surgical on call at middle grade level.
• Experience in Laparoscopic Hiatal Surgery
• Experience in Elective and Emergency Biliary Pathology
• Experience in Management of Pancreatitis
• Experience of audit and management
• Able to teach Medical Students
• Able to teach CT grades basic surgical procedures
• Interest in research
• Effective team working skills
• Demonstrate innovation and problem solving abilities
• Willingness to work as part of a team.
• Good communication skills
• Enquiring, critical approach to work
• Honesty and reliability

Desirable

• Postgraduate Thesis
• Entry on Specialist Register via CCT (must be within 6 months of interview)
• CESR
• Success in intercollegiate Speciality Examination or Overseas equivalent
• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in General Surgery
• Proven knowledge of systems and process of NHS or equivalent
• Sense of understanding and commitment to corporate responsibility
• Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists.
• Ability to manage and lead a surgical firm
• PGCE
• MD/MPhil/MSc
• Experience in running educational courses for basic and higher surgical trainees.
