We are looking for an individual to work with the diabetes podiatry service at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust potentially working across 15 locations. This is an exciting developmental opportunity.

You will have a proven record of excellence in providing diabetes podiatry and the ability to function as a sole podiatry practitioner. Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team and highly developed clinical skills are essential. The role involves the management of a high-risk caseload in both in-patient and out-patient settings, teaching and undertaking research work. You will work closely with the community podiatry team to provide a seamless service to the population provided by our department.

Staff are supported with appraisal (PDP), dedicated CPD time and in the longer term, rotation onto internal hospital-based training.

Main duties of the job

  • Be responsible for the management of a caseload of high risk patients, providing a comprehensive assessment of podiatric need, relevant health education and referral to other health care professionals as required.
  • The main duties of this post are to act as the Clinical Specialist Podiatrist in the field of Diabetes and wound care for both Primary and Secondary Care as part of a Multi-disciplinary Team providing cover for the team,

Job responsibilities

  • To provide wound management for a caseload of patients with current ulceration or at high risk of developing foot ulceration.
  • Provide a comprehensive assessment of podiatric need, relevant health education and referral to other health care professionals as required.
  • To have knowledge of referral routes for vascular wounds and ensure appropriate investigations such as duplex scans, angiograms and wounds are initiated and acted upon
  • To have knowledge of referral pathways and be able to request a range of treatment modalities for wounds such as larvae and VAC therapy.
  • To ensure that optimal healing of foot wounds occurs by ensuring blood glucose monitoring and actions occur.
  • Be responsible for ensuring a good working environment in which all patients and carers receive a high standard of care.
  • To be responsible for the implementation and monitoring of assessment tools to ensure optimum safety and care.
  • To be actively involved in helping to reduce the numbers of lower limb amputations undertaken in Southern Devon that are related to Diabetes and long term conditions.
  • To provide professional clinical leadership for podiatry staff, thus ensuring standards of clinical expertise and excellence in diabetic wound management for inpatients are continually maintained and improved.
  • To assist in improving knowledge and skills of the team on conditions that impact on tissue viability as a result of diabetes, vascular disease, infection ,musculoskeletal foot pathology for both community and secondary care as part of a Multi-disciplinary Team.
  • To provide the necessary specialised knowledge and skills in the holistic assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients presenting with complex wounds, bone and soft tissue infection and foot problems.
  • Provide education to empower patients, carers and other health professionals in the management of the At Risk and Ulcerated foot.
