Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist - Neurosciences

Job summary

To provide a specialist speech and language therapy service to children who require neuro-rehabilitation and who are in-patients or outpatients at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. This will involve assessment, diagnosis and management of their feeding and communication difficulties associated with their Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and other neurological conditions. This is within the context of the multi-disciplinary neuro-rehabilitation assessment.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist assessment and treatment of children and young adults requiring neuro-rehabilitation as inpatient and outpatients.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary meeting, goal setting meeting, discharge planning meetings and any other appropriate meetings to facilitate the best care for patients within the neuro-rehabilitation.
  • Assess, differentially diagnose and provide neuro-rehabilitation of complex communication and feeding disorders in this patient group
  • To provide and support the use of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems as appropriate
  • Ensure that parents, carers and patients are involved in the planning and execution of their child's communication programme wherever possible through goal setting and parent training.
  • Liaise with education and other specialist services where needed
  • Provide written reports regarding the outcome of assessment and differential diagnosis as part of the multi-disciplinary medical notes and reports
  • To liaise with local speech and language therapy teams and provide written and verbal handover for children transferring between BRHC and the community services
  • Communicate and discuss highly complex and sensitive information from clinical records and assessment with parents and the child if appropriate and with medical staff and members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • To see children as part of the neuro-rehabilitation out-patient programme as required

Essential
