University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW)

Consultant in Care of the Elderly (Frailty and NHS@Home)

The closing date is 28 May 2025

Job summary

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust (UHBW) has an exciting opportunity to join the expanding Care of the Elderly team based at Weston General Hospital (WGH). With the Healthy Weston programme driving the expansion of our Care of the Elderly department, we are developing a centre of excellence in a thriving and sustainable hospital at the heart of our community. With significant investment, and new services on the horizon, right now is a very exciting time to join the team.

At the Bristol Royal Infirmary there is a front door frailty team in reaching into ED and an established Older Persons Assessment Unit (OPAU). At WGH there is a new smaller OPAU. Both sites have plans to develop Frailty SDEC units. The post holder will rotate into the Frailty NHS@Home Service as part of a team of consultants specialising in community care. This is in partnership with colleagues at North Bristol Trust and the community to provide a frailty service for the population of BNSSG.

The successful applicant will be working alongside an established multidisciplinary team of 10 consultants, and one specialty doctor at the BRI or 6 Consultants and 1 Specialist at WGH as well as community partners helping to deliver the Frailty NHS@Home service across the local BNSSG population.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the care of complex, frail older people through our front door frailty service and on our Medicine for Older People wards. They will join a team of consultants well supported by a highly qualified multiprofessional team. They will contribute to the supervision of our resident doctors, teaching to undergraduate medical students and welcoming professional visitors to our team.

The successful candidate will be required to participate in additional out of hours commitments at the WGH site. At present this is a GIM unselected take but in the future may become a frailty on call commitment.

Candidates wishing to work less than full time are welcome to apply.
