Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and experienced person for the post of Band C Specialist Dental Officer within PCDS. You will be based in UHBW PCDS community clinics, and work across BNSSG and B&NES to lead on the delivery of dental care to PCDS patients including provision of treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia. You will provide clinical leadership including the development of relevant protocols and the training and mentoring of staff.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate clinical leadership within an NHS setting. Candidates will have drive and enthusiasm for service development and improvement to include the teaching and supervision of staff.

Applicants must also have an NHS performer number, be on an Appropriate Performers List or eligible to apply.

The post holder will be required to be on the GDC specialist list in Special Care Dentistry or Paediatric Dentistry.

This is a part-time, permanent, 22.5 hours per week post

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be eemployed by UHBW Primary care Dental Service. Part of University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. You will provide dental care to PCDS patients using a variety of treamtment modalities including local anaesthesia, inhalation and intravenous sedation, general anaesthetic, and domiciliary care.

The post holder will be expected to provide oral health care to these special care groups that may include people with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, severe mental health illnesses and the severely medically compromised. The post holder will be proficient in diagnosis, treatment plans, consent and treatment as appropriate for special care patients referred to the service. The post holder will be expected to lead on the provision of care, training and supervision for special care, travelling throughout BNSSG and B&NES when required. The post holder may also assist in the planning and clinical leadership of the Primary Care Dental Service.

The post-holder will be expected to liaise with colleagues across UHBW, and local General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) and other health and social care professionals as appropriate.

Candidates will be expected to hold the Bachelor in Dental Surgery qualification or equivalent, hold a relevant postgraduate qualification and have full GDC registration with being on the GDC Specialist list or holding the equivalent experience.

Job responsibilities

The post of PCDS Specialist Dentist (Band C) requires a degree of flexibility to meet the many challenges of providing a comprehensive and effective dental service for PCDS patients throughout the BNSSG and B&NES area. The post holder will be required to provide emergency and routine dental care for patients with severe issues who are unable to receive care from elsewhere within the service.

The post will be based at one of the Health Centres, or Clinics in Bristol and the surrounding area, but will be required to work at other bases within the BNSSG and B&NES catchment area to support the provision of this advanced service. The post holder will work alongside and is expected to support more junior clinicians with different competencies, or less experience and also Dental Therapists. The post holder will be expected to provide leadership at service level in special care / paediatric dentistry, career development and mentoring for their team of clinicians and support staff.

There may also be opportunities to undertake clinical attachments within Bristol Dental Hospital. There is also an enthusiastic and well qualified Oral Health Promotion team. The post holder will be expected to contribute to service development activities within UHBW PCDS and to develop and maintain positive working relationships with commissioners and other Health Care partners such as General Dental and Medical Practitioners, who may refer patients.

In addition Specialist dentists will be required to play a pivotal and integrated role in commissioning, delivering and maintaining exceptional paediatric services to all patients across UHBW PCDS.

Specific duties of the post may include some, or all of the following:

1. Clinical duties as defined by the RCS and GDC for acceptance on to the specialist list

2. Treatment carried out under all modalities including Local Anaesthetic, Sedation, or General Anaesthesia, provided at local hospitals.

3. Requirement to carry out domiciliary visits according to strict selection criteria.

4. The dental examination appropriate patient groups, treatment planning and referral for treatment on prescription to SDOs, DO and dental therapists.

5. Collaboration with General Dental Practitioners and professional colleagues in Hospital Dental Services.

6. Accept internal referrals from Service colleagues, where the patient presents need to be seen by a specialist community dental team.

7. Developing Integrated Care Pathways by liaison with general dental and medical practitioners, health visitors, social workers and other professional colleagues responsible for paediatric patients.

8. Collection and dissemination of information concerning provision of dental care to this specialist group.

9. Conducting epidemiological studies as part of Needs Assessment for the planning, commissioning and evaluation of dental services. For example Special School Screenings.

10. Active participation in clinical audit, continuing professional education and where appropriate, clinical research programmes.

11. Training and mentoring of staff to include, when required, the supervision of recently qualified, or inexperienced dentists, dental therapists and nurses.

12. The completion of Appraisals, Job Plans and Performance & Development reviews for junior staff; this may include therapists and Band 1 dental officers

13. Participation in the development of the Service in accordance with policies approved by local ICBs and UHBW. Provides leadership and training in specific areas to a range of staff plus the provision of clinical and organisational leadership and training in a recognised clinical specialist domain.
