Job summary
Applications are invited for two posts of clinical fellow in paediatric surgery and one post in paediatric orthopaedic surgery contributing to the paediatric surgery on call rota, based at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
- Two starting from August 2024 for 12 months (full time paediatric surgery/ urology)
- One starting from August 2024 for 6 months (full time paediatric surgery/urology)
- One from August 2024 for 12 months (daytime paediatric orthopaedic with on call duties in paediatric surgery/urology)
These 4 jobs are suitable for doctors from foundation to CT2/ST2 level wishing to gain experience in either paediatric surgery and/or paediatric orthopaedic surgery. There is flexibility to create a combined post of paediatric surgery and paediatric orthopaedic surgery over 12 months if appointed candidates would prefer this combination.
The paediatric surgery/ urology post provides excellent exposure to all areas of general and specialist paediatric surgery. The neonatal medicine and neonatal surgery intensive care unit is based at St Michael's Hospital, which is in close proximity to Bristol Children's Hospital.
The paediatric orthopaedic post offers lots of learning opportunities with a daily trauma meeting reviewing acute admissions. There is the possibility to attend trauma clinic and theatre lists.
Main duties of the job
You will work in a well supervised unit and will learn how to manage children with a variety of surgical conditions. You will be involved in looking after all children admitted to the Children's Hospital under the care of the Paediatric Surgeons, including children with oncology, thoracic, gastrointestinal, urology, and neonatal conditions. You will be welcome to scrub in theatres and can learn some basic surgical procedures such as hernia repair and appendicectomy. The 8 consultants all have at least 1 clinic a week and there is opportunity to attend these. In paediatric orthopaedic surgery you have the opportunity to attend fracture clinics and theatre lists.
