Job summary

The Surgical Division at University Hospitals Bristol & Weston are inviting applications from experienced and ambitious candidates for the role of Performance and Operations Manager for our Trauma & Orthopaedic service. The successful candidate will support with ensuring high quality scheduling of outpatient and admissions activity, including proactive patient-level management of RTT pathways.

Not only will the post holder lead the operational aspects of the service, they will work closely with the Assistant General Manager and divisional management team, using continuous service improvement to deliver the strategic objectives and recovery plan for our patients to reach our targets.

Main duties of the job

We welcome candidates from outside our industry, but applicants must have experience of providing senior operational service management and be an experienced people manager who embodies a Just Learning Culture to ensure staff feel supported appropriately, and to deal with issues in a non-judgemental and fair manner. This may include supporting with people processes such as managing sickness, conduct and performance issues. The individual will need to be highly visible across both the Weston and Bristol sites to ensure key relationships are built and maintained with all staff groups, and will need to possess strong influencing skills to engage various members of the multi-disciplinary team and be able to make difficult decisions, with support from the Assistant General Manager.

Candidates will be able to flex their communication style, to ensure they convey the right messages to a variety of groups of people (including patients, senior managers, direct reports and internal & external stakeholders). We are still integrating two sites that have different needs and therefore it is imperative the successful candidate has excellent organisational skills to ensure attention and care is given to both sites. As its a very busy service, the role will be fast paced, but you will be well supported with your personal development and will work within a nurturing environment.

Main duties of the job cont.

The post holder will be responsible for the effective management of the Trauma & Orthopaedics service across the Weston and Bristol sites at UHBW, managing outpatient and elective booking staff, and validation staff as appropriate. They will support the delivery of safe, high quality, patient-centred care and promote a positive working environment for staff.

You will oversee Trauma & Orthopaedics performance and lead the overall management of all administrative teams, with support from deputy Assistant Performance & Operations Managers. The post holder will supporting the administration teams to ensure high quality scheduling of activity, including proactive patient level management of diagnostic, 18-week referral to treatment (RTT) and Non RTT pathways.

You will be working closely with a multi-disciplinary team (including medical, nursing and non-clinical staff), and plan and co-ordinate resources within the Endoscopy service to ensure safe delivery of care, positive patient experiences, and achievement of access targets in line with Trust objectives. As well as being both patient and staff focussed, there is an expectation you will also be data driven and be able to produce performance reports for both internal and external audiences in order to monitor the service and find avenues for improvement.

The post holder is responsible for monitoring demand and capacity, ensuring the Trust delivers responsive and high quality services. This will require you to think outside the box to maximise capacity and find solutions where there isnt necessarily an obvious answer (no two days are the same!) The post holder will ensure that patients are managed in line with Trust policies and national standards for booking.

There is an expectation that the post holder will support the Assistant General Manager with service improvements, and work closely with clinical and non-clinical colleagues to support a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. This role is an excellent opportunity to build on your existing operational experience, and develop strategic long term planning of the service, including working within the Surgery Divisions objectives, and UHBW as a whole.

This post is available as a full time (37.5hrs per week) post and involves cross site working at both Weston General Hospital and Bristol Royal Infirmary. Weston General Hospital will be the post holder's primary base.
