Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced piped medical gas maintenance engineer to join the MEMO Clinical Engineering team at UHBW, to supervise the group's maintenance functions.

As a piped medical gas maintenance supervisor, you will work in the Mechanical Services team within MEMO Clinical Engineering, to effectively deliver the maintenance of piped medical gas services, both within the Trust and to our external customers.

We require an enthusiastic engineer with good knowledge and experience of medical gas pipeline systems (MGPS), with a speciality towards the HTM 02-01 operational management and maintenance activities. The successful candidate will have the strong ability to supervise the team and individuals, the required day-to-day maintenance functions, and also long-term planning of pre-planned maintenance to adhere to contractual requirements. Good knowledge of the HTM 02-01 is essential.

The role will be busy and varied, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a range of activities as part of our mechanical services team. Support will be given to develop expertise through training, ongoing support and development.

The successful candidate will be required to participate in the departments on-call rota, providing 24/7 support to our customers.

Main duties of the job

  • Participate in the medical gas pipeline systems 'out of hours' on-call rota to provide an emergency support service to our customers (in the Bristol and surrounding region).
  • Carry out and supervise the maintenance, service and repair, commissioning, and testing of medical gas pipeline systems.
  • Deputise for the departments team leader when/where required.
  • Control allocated daily work schedule within the team using our asset management system, Medusa.
  • Efficient use of Microsoft office applications to effectively supervise the range of maintenance tasks.
  • Advise on advanced fault finding & repair issues for a range of complex piped medical gas equipment and patient-critical mechanical equipment.
  • Appointment to MGPS Authorised Person status (high hazard) for all contracted sites.
  • To be proactive and self-sufficient in the role, and to develop the effectiveness of the team's maintenance functions.
  • Organise team workload and prioritise routine and breakdown work based on level of risk, demands and needs of the clinical areas.
  • Complete task related risk assessments and method statements.
  • Contribution towards annual AE site audits, to provide supporting information such as maintenance records and action plans.
  • Regularly update specialist engineering and supervisory knowledge acquired through attendance of in-house or external training courses.
  • Drive to other premises outside UHBW to carry out work - A full UK driving license is essential.

Essential

  • Additional highly specialist knowledge of electro/mechanical medical equipment and MGPS. This includes knowledge acquired through servicing advanced patient - critical equipment and installation/commissioning/maintenance of MGPS (across a number of specialist areas) found in a modern healthcare environment and/or a postgraduate diploma or through a programme of attending a large number of manufacturers' / college study days and courses in the appropriate equipment.
  • Completed a formal apprenticeship in electrical/mechanical engineering or received equivalent approved training to the level that is appropriate for the required postgraduate qualifications

Desirable

  • HNC/HND/Degree in mechanical or mechatronics engineering or equivalent
  • Evidence of continuing professional development across a number of areas. Up to date detailed knowledge on medical engineering in the UK market
  • Incorporated level Engineer or equivalent
  • Voluntary registration as a Clinical Technologist
  • Supervisory management qualification and/or knowledge of HR procedures e.g. sickness monitoring, appraisals and recruitment & selection
  • IOSH or NEBOSH certificate in health and safety management

  • Significant experience designing, installing and commissioning medical gas pipeline systems and mechanical design and manufacturing, with a sound working knowledge of installation and repair of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices and equipment
  • Detailed knowledge of computer systems - Service Management information, Microsoft Office & test software applications. Experience of servicing/fault finding of complex software controlled equipment. Able to use Microsoft Office, to set up documents, spreadsheets and presentations
  • Daily use of service database, call-logging, MIS data entry
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, procedures and practices e.g. DoH/MHRA, ISO 9000/13485, Health and Safety, RIDDOR, COSHH, IPEM, Infection Control
  • Recent experience as a competent person (MGPS) designing, installing and maintaining piped medical gas systems
