This 12 month fixed-term Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist (Maternity Cover) post provides an exciting opportunity to work within the Metabolic, Neuroendocrine and Nutrition (MN&N) laboratory within Clinical Biochemistry at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. The post holder will be part of a team providing a specialist biochemistry service to the Trust and other laboratories within the South-West region. The team comprises Medical Laboratory Assistants, Associate Practitioners, Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists, and Medical staff. The post holder will also interact with many other individuals within and outside of the Trust.

The post holder will assist in managing the daily activities of a busy and dynamic specialist laboratory, which provides analytical tests that aid the diagnosis and monitoring of metabolic and neuroendocrine disorders. Methodology within the section is primarily based on chromatography (UPLC/HPLC & GC) with various detection methods (ESI-MS/MS, EI-MS, ECD, FLD, UV/VIS).

Main duties of the job

We welcome applications from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with experience of working in a clinical laboratory. Experience of working with chromatographic techniques is essential. You will join a team of enthusiastic scientific and clinical staff in providing a high-quality Clinical Biochemistry service to the Trust.

The postholder will:

  • Contribute to the provision of a high-quality technical service, by resolving analytical problems and reviewing both internal quality control and external quality assurance performance.
  • Supervise the section and staff to ensure that its workload is handled within agreed turnaround times.
  • Be supported to develop knowledge and skills in the wide range of general and specialist analytical methods used in the investigation of both adult and paediatric disease, including inherited metabolic disorders.
  • Participate in service improvements through assay development, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Gain experience in service governance through participation in quality improvement initiatives and service management and clinical governance meetings.
