Job summary
This post holder will work with the Theatre team to deliver direct and indirect patient case and at all times to work under the direction of a qualified member of Nursing/ODP staff.
To escort surgical patients to and from the operating theatre and work alongside theatre staff to provide excellent patient care.
Main duties of the job
Direct Patient Care:
- To facilitate the smooth and safe transfers of patients throughout their anaesthetic, surgical and recovery and procedure periods between wards or departments and the operating theatres and recovery.
- Contribute to the ongoing support of patients and their family members during the transfer to theatre.
- Undertake standard checking procedure when collecting patients from wards and departments.
- Communicate in a manner and pace appropriate to the patients ability, personal beliefs and preferences within trust and legal constraints
- To be aware of the safeguarding guidelines for vulnerable patients
Indirect Patient Care
- Support, welcome and assist visitors to the department
- Liaise with other professionals as required within the boundaries of the role
- To undertake domestic duties as required e.g. cleaning floors in theatres, moving clinical rubbish and sharps bins as required and in line with current infection control guidelines.
- Assist with stocking of unit - sterile supplies and pharmacy
- Assist in stocking theatre hats, blue slide sheets, oxygen masks and oxygen tubing.
- Emptying of sterile instruments and putting away in appropriate storage place
- Assist the materials managements team in putting away stock
- To assist with putting away of IV fluid/pharmacy stock when delivered
- Transport soiled instruments and clinical rubbish to designated collection points
- To handle and transport specimens in line with trust policy
