Job summary
The Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) within UHBW provides high quality care for a range of malignant and non-malignant conditions for the population of Bristol, Weston-Super-Mare, and the wider region as a tertiary centre. To meet the growing needs of our patients Non-Medical Advanced Practice (AP) roles have been developed within UHBW and BHOC and have been successfully contributing to the multiprofessional workforce. There are many examples where these autonomous roles are now established and integral as part of the wider MDT, and there is a wealth of national and international literature which shows that these roles are accepted by patients and the quality of care has been established as safe and of a high quality.
As a Haematology AP you will join an existing AP who works within the adult leukaemia team and has been transformative in improving the patient experience and safety by providing continuity of care for complex leukaemia patients. Over time the expectation is that the Haematology APs will develop an in-depth knowledge of the Haematological conditions managed in BHOC and the complications of these diseases and their treatments. The longer-term nature of these posts will contribute to the Organisational memory and provide support for junior medical and nursing staff.
Band 8a - or Band 7 till completion of MSc in Advanced Practice and relevant experience.
Main duties of the job
The Haematology APs will rotate between inpatient ward cover and non-ward activities. Haematology ward cover would continue to provide SHO level support currently provided by the education fellows with supervision from the ward registrar and Consultant, but with increasing ability to review and manage patients independently. It is expected that the Haematology APs would support Haematology patients admitted to either inpatient ward in BHOC, inclusive of the Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) unit. The non-ward role would be an outpatient/outlier function, supporting pre-assessment clinics, bone marrow procedure lists and blood test and review clinics. It is also envisaged that they would be able to support the team looking after Haematology patients outlying in other wards in the hospital.
Note: Start date mid August 2024
