Job summary

An exciting opportunity has opened for an Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, at St Michael' s Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), in Bristol. This is a level 3 unit with 31 cots providing care for babies, not only requiring the full spectrum of neonatal medical care, but also those requiring specialist referral for neonatal surgery, cardiology and neurology, for example. Because of this we work very closely with various teams, at the nearby, Bristol Children's Hospital (BCH). Also, due to the different hospital sites, there will be opportunities to maintain, or develop, neonatal transport skills, as there can be several transports a day between the two hospitals, many of which are led by an ANNP.

The post holder would work on the Tier 1 rota, at present, mainly in ITU, which has 15 cots, on a shift pattern that includes weekends and nights. The role is 80% clinical with the remaining 20% dedicated to other activities, which meet service needs, within the four pillars e.g. education, leadership and management, audit and research.

Currently ANNP's are involved in activities such as, Simulation Training, the medical induction programme, teaching on the QIS course, updating and developing unit guidelines, clinical governance, and data collection for PeriPrem and ATAIN.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic new colleague to join our team. Applicants should be qualified ANNP 's, including non medical prescribing, with proven clinical skills, a sound knowledge base and demonstrable leadership skills. Out of the 31 cots, 15 are ITU, 8 high dependency, 8 special care, with a, midwifery led, transitional care ward located next to the post-natal wards. Following an initial period of being supernumerary, the main responsibilities would include carrying the emergency bleep, attending high-risk deliveries, and being capable of providing the first line of support. You would be expected to be able to work autonomously, within agreed protocols and guidelines, to plan, implement and monitor individualised, evidenced based care.

For this role you would be expected to have excellent communication skills and be able to collaborate with all members of the multidisciplinary team, locally, across University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) and beyond.
