Job summary
The post-holder will be a member of the Sleep team within the Sleep-Breathing Disorders Unit at Bristol Royal Infirmary. The unit covers a wide geographical area and provides diagnostic and therapeutic services in line with NICE NG202. We undertake a range of diagnostic tests including oximetry, respiratory polygraphy, polysomnography MSLT/MWT and Actigraphy. We have 10,000 patients on auto-CPAP and have close links with Bristol Dental Hospital for MAD devices and the ENT department at UHBW.
You will lead the respiratory polygraphy and polysomnography section, including scoring and reporting, line-managing night staff, teaching and training of in-house staffs and staff undertaking PTP, STP and other qualifications. Additionally, you will undertake outpatient sleep clinic work assessing new and follow-up patients and planning and reviewing their diagnostic and therapeutic pathways as appropriate. Some late-shift work, setting up polysomnography studies etc, may be required
Main duties of the job
- To be responsible for the provision and quality of all aspects of overnight respiratory polygraphy and polysomnography services in adults within UHBW.
- Plan, perform, interpret and report a range of basic and highly complex Sleep Study investigations to a high level of competence on patients, regularly using complex software, and where appropriate initiate subsequent management.
- Undertake highly specialist non-medical outpatient services for patients which includes initial and follow-up assessments, initiating and evaluating different patient specific treatment regimens
- Participates in medical/non-medical outpatient clinics for patients undergoing review of CPAP treatment trials/long-term undergoing review and 1:1 CPAP set-ups for patients with additional and/or complex needs.
- Provide DVLA reports as requested (HCPC registrant only)
- To actively participate in the MDT meetings in relation to sleep patients
- Work with the Consultant Clinical Scientist (CCS) to plan, co-ordinate and deliver ongoing teaching and training to the Sleep Unit and other staff as required, including students through national training schemes, apprenticeships and Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC), and to carers providing support to CPAP patients.
- To set-up, develop and participate in audit and research and development programmes in collaboration with the Consultant Clinical Scientist
