Job summary
Applications are warmly welcomed for two 12-month, fixed-term posts of Clinical Fellow in Medical Retina and Uveitis at BEH. These positions offer the perfect platform for sub-specialist training in medical retina services, uveitis, and general ophthalmology care for patients at the Bristol Eye Hospital (BEH) and Weston General Hospital (WGH). Our commitment to innovation is at the heart of BEH's culture.
As a highly regarded Regional Centre for Ophthalmology within the Division of Surgery at UHBW, BEH takes immense pride in offering a tertiary referral retina service. Our integrated medical retina, uveitis, and vitreo-retinal service work in close collaboration with an excellent Clinical Research Unit, which was honoured with the Recognising Success Award for Innovation and Improvement in 2019. Supported by an exceptional medical imaging department, our new Retinal Unit Outpatients Department is equipped to provide exceptional care. Involvement in clinical research trials is encouraged to promote professional growth and contribute to cutting-edge advancements in the field.
To be considered for these positions, candidates should have completed their higher surgical training in the UK or hold an equivalent qualification. We are particularly interested in individuals with previous clinical experience in medical retina, unsupervised retinal laser experience, and expertise in intravitreal injections.
Main duties of the job
- 8 clinical sessions and 2 research / study / admin sessions in a Monday to Friday working week.
- Out of the 8 clinical sessions, all fellows are required to undertake 2 outreach sessions per week, at peripheral sites including South Bristol Community Hospital, Cribbs Causeway and Weston General Hospital.
- Ward cover for medical ophthalmology will be provided by the fellows in consort with the firm (SpR and ST1-2) for the investigation and treatment of severe ocular inflammatory disease. Ward rounds occur daily at 8.00am.
- Emergency Department: The medical retina fellows will act periodically as a reserve doctor for eye casualty sessions, covering the leave or sickness of other doctors.
Cataract surgery is not part of the Medical Retina fellowship-training programme; however there are opportunities to operate during the 12-month period for clinical fellows that are competent in cataract surgery prior to the fellowship.
