Job summary

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual to our friendly, dedicated neurophysiology team, within the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children/Bristol Royal Infirmary.

The vacancy is a 6 month fixed-term contract, providing cover for a member of the team who is on secondment.

The Neurophysiology Department is responsible for performing investigations of a specialist nature on patients of all ages.

The post holder will be expected to:

  • Perform a range of basic and advanced outpatient and inpatient neurophysiological investigations, to a high level of competence.
  • Undertake the interpretation of investigations and provide technical reports and/or advice.
  • Work collaboratively with other multi-disciplinary staff to ensure that the service needs for the neurophysiology department are met.
  • Participate in the coordination and provision of the weekend on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

  1. Multi-channel electroencephalograph (EEG) recordings with Hyperventilation, Photic Stimulation and Video Monitoring, utilising current standard techniques and taking appropriate action(s) when necessary.
  2. Portable EEG recordings on the wards, including emergency EEGs on the intensive care units (PICU, NICU and adult ICUs at the BRI). This is to include Continuous EEG monitoring on the PICU when deemed applicable. Appropriate action(s) should be taken when necessary.
  3. Daytime, sleep deprived EEGs.
  4. EEG recordings during, or following, administration of medication.
  5. EEG recording during stimulation of a non-routine nature.
  6. Long-term ambulatory EEG monitoring taking appropriate action(s) when necessary.
  7. Long-term Video EEG monitoring, taking appropriate action(s) when necessary
  8. To perform nerve conduction studies in a Healthcare Scientist (Neurophysiology) led nerve conduction clinic.
  9. The recording of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses (BAER) both in the department and on the wards, taking appropriate action(s) where necessary.
  10. Undertake the recording of Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP) to Flash and Pattern Stimulation, including electroretinograms (ERG), both in the department and on the wards, taking appropriate action(s) where necessary.
  11. Undertake Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SSEP) testing, both in the department and on the wards, taking appropriate action(s) where necessary.

  • BSc (Hons) Or equivalent formal specialist training (e.g BTec HNC/HND in MPPM or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • RCCP / AHCS registration

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • An advanced level of up to date knowledge, achieved through experience in the field of Neurophysiology
  • Previous experience of working with paediatrics

Desirable

  • Performing EEGs on potentially challenging paediatric patients, with needs above and beyond the majority of outpatient referrals
  • Independently performing Nerve Conduction Studies
