Job summary

Are you an exercise instructor or sports therapist who has an interest in working in an acute hospital? Would you like to be able to make an impact on patients experience whilst they wait to have a major operation? Then this may be the role for you!

This is a unique opportunity for an exercise instructor to work in a large acute hospital alongside physiotherapists, nurses, occupational therapists and surgeons to improve the fitness, nutritional and psychological wellbeing of our patients prior to major surgery.

Prehabilitation is preparing patients for cancer treatment or surgery. The goal is to improve fitness, optimise nutrition and support psychological wellbeing, as well as address other risk factors such as smoking and drinking alcohol. There is evidence to show that by doing this we can reduce post-operative complications and the time patients spend in hospital.

UHBW is a large surgical centre offering surgery in many specialities. We are a small but well established prehabilitation service that has embedded itself into the Trust. We are constantly working to improve and grow our service across the south west and to date have achieved excellent patient outcomes and feedback. This has been presented at national conferences.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be responsible for your own caseload. You will work alongside the surgical team to decide on which patients require optimisation. For these patients you will need to complete a comprehensive assessment and then be able to create a personalised treatment plan (including exercise prescription) and set realistic goals. During follow ups you will need to progress or regress exercise plans and provide essential reassurance and encouragement to patients. Patient contact in this role is a mix of face to face and virtual options.

Another key role is running our prehabilitation exercise class; this enables us to provide a supervised exercise option for those patients with more co-morbidities or risks to exercise.

Training will be provided around surgical specialities, assessing nutritional risk, supporting wellbeing (Level 2 cancer psychology training) and managing smoking cessation.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate individual to join our friendly prehabilitation team. You must be able to confidently work 1:1 with patients as well as in a group setting to assess and provide personalised exercise programs. It is essential that applicants are able to recognise their scope of practice and seek support when needed to deliver safe, high quality care.
