Job summary
The Head of Vascular Science (VSU) is responsible and accountable for the operational management of the unit and staff, ensuring the efficient, effective and safe day to day running of the clinical service. The post holder will provide inclusive & compassionate leadership, be a force for change, identify new opportunities and lead the VSU team with a clear vision.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for the operational management of services across the Bristol and Weston sites. They will directly line manage the senior scientists and support the Training & Development Leads to deliver the local training strategy. They will work closely with the Director of Medical Physics & Bioengineering (MPB) and other MPB Group Heads on strategy and operational planning for the MPB department.

Qualifications and Training
Essential
- First level degree in a relevant scientific subject
- Masters level degree in Healthcare/Clinical/Physiological Science or equivalent
- HCPC registration
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable
- Accredited Vascular Scientist by Society for Vascular Technology of Great Britain and Northern Ireland or completion of the Scientist Training Programme with evidence of competency to autonomously scan common vascular science scans
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- In depth understanding of specialist healthcare science activities and management knowledge within the NHS
- Experience of training, mentoring and supporting others to develop their own skills
- Experience of interpreting current and developing guidelines, policies, processes, plans and reviews affecting diagnostic services at trust, region and national level
- Knowledge and experience of workforce and long term service planning
- Proficiency in the performance of routine and complex practical vascular scanning with advanced theoretical knowledge

- Ability to analyse complex information comprising scientific data, images and clinical information. Ability to formulate appropriate advice and make appropriate judgments involving facts or situations that impact on patients
- Evaluate the current and future role of a vascular scientist in providing patient centred healthcare and can debate current issues and future challenges and the strategic direction of the specialism
- Ability to identify opportunities for research and innovation and successfully complete and disseminate findings
- Excellent IT skills and knowledge of common computing packages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages, databases, reference management and handling of clinical data sets
