Job summary

There is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to move into the field of laboratory medicine / transfusion science without the need for any previous experience.

As the traceability clerk you will be responsible for the final fating and follow up of all blood and blood components issued from Bristol Royal Infirmary's Transfusion Laboratory.

We are a large busy laboratory with multiple transfusion specialities and this role is vital to ensure the safe and correct final part of the transfusion chain.

This role will be based either within the transfusion laboratory or transfusion office, however there is a requirement to visit ward, theatres and other clinical locations to retrieve blood that has not been required and return it to the transfusion laboratory safely for re-issue.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of the transfusion team within pathology at Bristol Royal Infirmary, the successful postholder will ensure the traceability of all blood and blood components, referring to the Transfusion Practitioners, Laboratory Manager, and / or senior Biomedical Scientist when required.

Traceability of all blood and blood components is required by the MHRA and is a legal requirement of all NHS and private trusts.

The post will be Monday to Friday 08:00 - 16:30 and the postholder will be required to travel around the hospital returning un-used red blood cells to the transfusion laboratory.

Full training will be provided and the postholder is not expected to have previous knowledge of blood, blood components, transfusion, or traceability. Although this would be an advantage.
