Job summary

Bristol Radiotherapy Physics has a brand new, Band 5Dosimetrist/Clinical Technologistpostdue to an exciting expansion of our service.

There is lots to get involved with as a Band 5with additional possibility to gain HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist via Route 2.

In Bristol we have 5 Elekta Agility-Head linacs with onboard imaging (our next commissioning cycle kicks off next year), Varian HDR brachytherapy (Prostate, Gynae, Oesophagus, Skin), Gammaknife, Molecular RT, 2 Philips Wide Bore CT's, Raystation TPS, Clarity Ultrasound and surface guided RT, as well as a 3D printer.

We also work alongside a Scientific Computing team and have developed several Python based in-house applications as well as Raystation scripts.

The Radiotherapy Physics group works with a multidisciplinary team including doctors, radiographers, computing and engineering staff.

We use and develop the latest technology to ensure the best possible radiotherapy treatments for our patients.

Main duties of the job

  • Plan and carry out calibration measurements and QC equipment checks of Linear Accelerators, Brachytherapy unit, CT scanner, MRI Scanner and associated equipment, to ensure their safe and accurate operation, in accordance with Radiotherapy Physics department's QA program traceable to professional and National Standards.
  • Carry out initial QC data analysis, for checking by competent Physicists. Understand the acceptable tolerances and immediately draw to the attention of the Head of Section, or other appropriate physicist, any data that is not within tolerance.
  • Undertake acceptance testing and commissioning of radiotherapy equipment, as determined by the Head of Section
  • To generate treatment plans for simple and complex radiotherapy treatments for a range of clinical sites.
  • The post-holder may assist with specialist clinical technical services, for example as part of the TBI, Gamma knife or Brachytherapy rotas.
  • To assist with administration tasks related to dosimetry.
  • In providing all the above services, the post holder acts as an Operator within the meaning of the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations.

Desirable

  • Experience of carrying out quality control checks of radiotherapy equipment. The post holder must know and understand enough about radiation and the radiotherapy equipment that generates the radiation to make safe and reliable measurements in the quality control process.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • The post holder must be able to be sufficiently highly dextrous to position delicate instruments such as radiation dose meters accurately under the radiation beam to be measured without damaging the sensitive devices.
  • Another example is the need for fine control of input devices on radiotherapy treatment planning computers in order that the delineations of organs and target volumes are made with the intended accuracy.
  • Good numeracy and logical thinking skills are needed to apply and adapt the class solutions in order to achieve the optimum treatment plan.
  • In visiting the linear accelerator to perform quality control, which is generally done on a daily basis, the post holder must be strong enough to move dosimetry equipment weighing up to 12 Kg, the post holder must be able to move the material in and out of the beam multiple times on each quality control visit.
  • The post holder must have the emotional resilience to spend time working with, and in the vicinity of, terminally ill cancer patients including young such patients.

  • Good organisation skills.
  • Good IT skills and knowledge of computing packages for Wordprocessing, spreadsheets, presentation packages and databases.
