Job summary
The Medical Illustration team in UHBW are looking for an enthusiastic and creative medical artist (fixed term - 1 year) to join our growing team. Since the video service was started at UHBW just under 4 years ago, demand has increased for illustrated assets and animation. In this time, the team's services have also expanded into graphics, illustration and printed publications. As a team, we primarily provide clinical and non-clinical photography as well as in-house video solutions that cover clinical videography, patient information videos, training films, recruitment and other promotional materials, including some internal communications. We also produce guidebooks, posters and patient pamphlets for patients and staff.
We are looking for a passionate, forward-thinking and considerate individual to complement our growing team of photographers and videographers. Someone who is keen to work for NHS and enthusiastic about putting their skills to use within the National Health Service, where patient care comes first.
Main duties of the job
This role will help to ensure we deliver a comprehensive clinical & non-clinical graphics an illustration service to the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and external clients, ensuring all work is produced to the highest possible standards within budget constraints and the timescale allowed. It will also ensure that the video service in Medical Illustration manages to keep up with the increasing demand for animated content in their videos. The Medical Illustration service is customer focused and involves providing support and advice to clients. The media produced is used for patient records, publication, teaching and promotional purposes.
You will be working with existing team members, healthcare professionals, clients and patients to ensure all video projects are completed to a high standard and in a timely manner. While the main focus of the job will be in illustration, we are looking for someone who has the flexibility to also help, when required, in graphic design and animation.

Qualifications and Training
Essential
- Degree (e.g. BSc) in medical art/illustration/design or related subject or equivalent level of knowledge and experience
- You will on occasion be required to travel to other locations in the Southwest. You must have a driving license
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification (e.g. MSc PGCert) in Medical Illustration or a relevant discipline
- Eligible for AHCS registration
- Willingness to use of own car/vehicle
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Excellent knowledge of medical art/illustration practice
- Excellent knowledge of physiology and anatomy
- Demonstrate creativity in the interpretation of client brief
- Good knowledge of current trends in the medical art /illustration profession
- Good experience of using complex software to create digital content including, Adobe After effects, Adobe Photoshop, Animate, and Procreate)
Desirable
- Experience of 3D programmes and software, for example ZBrush or Blender
- Experience of supporting the development of less experienced staff with producing medical art/illustration
- Experience of producing medical art within a healthcare setting or for a healthcare provider
- Experience of managing and using motion graphics and animation with film and video production
- Thorough understanding of consent and confidentiality issues
- Demonstrate knowledge of other specialties within the profession; video, photography, print

- Physically capable of carrying equipment around the hospital site if required to support other members of staff within the Medical Illustration and able to show a high level of hand-eye coordination
- Excellent standard of IT skills. Ability to use the following software packages: Microsoft Office and Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
- Ability to view high volumes of images using display screens and equipment which will require a high level of concentration
- Multi-tasking - being able to complete several jobs running simultaneously. Working around problems i.e., Meeting tight deadlines despite computer failures
- Ability to prioritise. Ability to work under pressure
- Able to work effectively both under own initiative and as a team member
- Able to work in an environment where you may be witness to potentially upsetting imagery, including results of injury, disease or in the presence of the recently bereaved
- Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to provide and receive complex information from colleagues and clients
- Willingness to learn and develop CPD
