An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our renowned tertiary referral Hand Wrist and Elbow Surgery Team between the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and North Bristol NHS.
The department has a reputation for innovation, teaching and research and the current team are key opinion leaders in their respected fields. The trauma commitments of the post are based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary with elective operating sessions split between UHBW and Southmead Hospital (North Bristol NHS Trust).
The post will focus on the provision of general trauma, complex hand and wrist trauma, & elective surgery and includes day case / inpatient surgery, outpatient clinics, and currently a 1 in 12general orthopaedic on call commitments anticipated to go to 1:14. Bristol Royal Infirmary is a trauma unit and is situated next to the regional paediatric major trauma unit for children. It has close links with major trauma unit for adults at North Bristol Trust and has recently established a specialist unit for "Silver" trauma with integrated care between Orthopaedic Surgeons and specialist Orthogeriatricians
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be expected to undertake general and fracture/acute clinics, including a commitment to the Virtual Fracture Clinic. It is anticipated that the post-holder will have a component of their job plan dedicated to ward rounds and junior clinical supervision/on-ward teaching. In addition, the post-holder will have a commitment to general trauma lists, elective operating, and an on-call commitment including regular weekend working 1 in 12 with a view to 1 in 14 in the future. The job plan will be split 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA.
The upper limb unit currently consists of three surgeons, providing a tertiary referral hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder surgery service.
The successful candidate is expected to integrate with other colleagues, including hand therapists in the unit. The post is supported by two extended role physiotherapy practitioners, one with a special interest in complex hand and wrist and the other elbow tertiary pathologies. It also has the support of the hand unit which has seven occupational and physiotherapists covering most aspects of hand and wrist rehabilitation.
The successful candidate is expected to have a keen interest in upper limb trauma with the specific emphasis on delivering an upper limb trauma service (day to day management, theatre and planning). Also, to deliver a busy hand and wrist surgery service, train a post CCT fellow and also an ST (from Severn Deanery Rotation). An interest in complex elbow surgery is desirable.
