Job summary

The General Surgery Department at Weston General Hospital, as part of the wider University Hospitals Bristol and Weston are proud to advertise for an exciting opportunity to combine ongoing clinical experience with time (unpaid by the trust) for other aspects of medical training such as a Masters Degree or PhD in research or quality improvement or equivalent.

It is expected that the candidate is likely to be an established Health Education England Higher Surgical Trainee taking a planned Out of Program Experience (OOPE) and have their research project/MD/PhD already approved and arranged. This post is designed to complement that work.

The department is closely involved in the 'Healthy Weston' programme and the development of ground breaking Same Day Emergency Surgery (SDEC) pathways, first class elective Day Case Surgery, and Endoscopy. We continue to provide inpatient colorectal cancer care, benign upper GI and post emergency admission care. We have excellent close links with Bristol sites for other visiting specialities, including Hepatobiliary and Oesphagogastric, Breast and Vascular teams.

Main duties of the job

This post will help support the importance of SDEC to our department. The successful applicant will work in a flexible pattern and take a full slot on our registrar level on call rota. The commitment is 1:5 during the week and 1:8 at the weekends. The remainder of the less than full time contract (exact hours/week to be agreed on discussion) will consist of elective work planned flexibly around the candidate's research commitments. It will be a fixed term contract of 2 years to reflect the length of the OOPE post.

Weston is a small hospital within the larger trust, and as a department of 7 substantive consultants (3 colorectal, 3 Upper GI, 1 General) we believe this post provides exciting chances to continue to develop clinically and academically in a supportive environment, where people actually get to know you. Please do ask any questions about these posts via email katrina.butcher@uhbw.nhs.uk (Consultant Upper GI Surgeon) and we can arrange a visit so you can really get the feel of our department and meet some potential future colleagues.
