Job summary

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust are looking to appoint Consultant Physicians in Acute Medicine with Specialty Interests, based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI).

The BRI acute medical team currently consists of 3 substantive consultants, who work closely with the emergency department (ED), frailty service, and other specialties. Whilst the team is relatively small, the Trust has big plans and a vision for future development of the acute service. This in mind, UHBW is keen to grow quickly - the successful candidate will join a highly motivated and driven team all looking to pioneer and advance the department.

Main duties of the job

As part of the Trust’s vision for developing its acute medicine services, UHBW has made agreed major investment and change to its model of care. There is a three year commitment to further expansion and investment in acute medicine services which offers exciting opportunities in service growth and development for the successful candidate. The Trust established a Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service, run jointly with the ED in August 2020 and there are ambitious plans to develop same day emergency care further. You will have a rare opportunity to influence and shape future services and models of care.

The Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) is a major University Hospital and you will be committed to delivering excellent teaching and training. The BRI is situated in the city centre, co-located with the regional centres for Paediatrics, Dental Services, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Head and Neck Surgery, Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology and is adjacent to maternity services and the University of Bristol.

The Acute Medicine teams primary duties are the initial assessment of medical patients at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. The medical take sees in excess of 40 patients a day, providing initial assessment, investigation and diagnosis of patients that are admitted to the hospital either via the Emergency Department or by direct referral from their GP.

The team also covers inpatient short stay beds, primarily for patients with a predicted length of stay <72 hours, and provides senior medical cover for the acute medicine clinic service (recently merged with the SDEC pilot).

  • Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the General Medical Council (GMC) or
  • Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview
