Job summary

Thank you for your interest in the role of Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in one of the following specialties:

Glaucoma/Oculoplastic/Cataracts

The successful candidate for this appointment will join an expanding department of Ophthalmology, joining other established Consultant Ophthalmologist posts.

You will be joining an enthusiastic team committed to providing an ophthalmology service to the local population to a high standard. The successful candidate would need to be prepared to take on new challenges to expand the service, and work collaboratively with other team members.

Close collaboration of all the consultants takes place with regular monthly team meetings and there is a close working relationship with the managers of the service.

The management is supportive of developing the ophthalmology service, which is one of the core strategic aims of the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide and develop a comprehensive ophthalmology service, incorporating their individual subspecialty, in collaboration with other medical, nursing and technical staff.
  • Teaching of Junior Staff, Medical Students, Optometrists and other professionals.
  • To provide supervision and training to other Hospital Doctors.
  • To participate in clinical audit, evidence-based practice and Clinical Governance within the Department.
  • To participate in regional sub-specialty audit and Clinical Governance.
  • To participate actively in continuing professional development (CPD).

About us

The Trust has heavily invested into the infrastructure of the department with IT software and hardware so we have achieved going paper light which enables us to provide a digital service virtually across the 3 sites that YDH ophthalmology department covers in East Somerset. We have upgraded our diagnostic equipment and ensured that it is all links to the forum so all aspects of care are at your fingertips.

To compliment this, we have redesigned our nursing workforce and worked closely with our LOC to train optometrists to help deliver a quality service.

We are actively involved in research and development having 4 national trials in our portfolio.

All resulting in achieving NICE guidelines and National Targets .
